Be it a six year old child or a 60 year old grandmother, every person irrespective of their age is aware of social media platforms and uses them to some degree. A study by Sprout Social concluded that a whopping 71 percent of the respondents of the survey were using social media more than earlier. Gen Z, Millenials, Gen X and Baby Boomers were no different when it comes to usage of social media and the usage across all age groups has been growing significantly over the last few years. Looking specifically at the Indian market, one can notice the huge influx of internet users across even the deepest pockets of the country. According to Statista survey, India had close to 500 million active internet users as of Jan 2019. As of January 2019, India's digital population amounted to approximately 560 million active users. Largely used through mobiles, internet usage in India has been rising exponentially and the country is all set to become the world's second-largest internet market.On the flip side, brands and business are not letting go of this massive opportunity to reach consumers and have been relying on social media to market products to the target audience. According to reports as many as 91 percent brands today have some form of social media presence. And rightly so! Social media marketing is arguably the most cost-effective form of marketing. It not only enables brands to target the specific demographic but also provides them with a wider reach in a short period. The fact that all the metrics can be measured in real-time, is just the cherry on the cake. Over the years, the industry has witnessed social media marketing undergoing constant evolution. Today, marketers can choose from a wide variety of platforms and tools based on their requirements. In terms of B2C segment, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram, and Snapchat have emerged as some of the most sought after platforms for marketing. On the flipside, Twitter, Youtube, and Slideshare work better for B2B segments. The key however remains that brands craft a well thought out and holistic social media marketing strategy. Technology has also emerged as a game changer in the social media marketing sector. New age tools and technologies such as chat-bots, AR & VR technologies, voice search etc have been gaining momentum. One is also seeing the emergence of influencer marketing, user generated content and ephemeral content. One thing is certain, the future will have social media be a part of our lives.
