Many people feel that PTSD is only related to Army per-sonnel, who have returned from war. This is far from the truth. PTSD is a much more common disorder than the general assumption in society. Many cases remain undetected and can of-ten be misdiagnosed for an anxiety or a personality disorder. A skilled psy-chiatrist, a clinical psychologist or a psychotherapist can give an accurate diagnosis of more `masked' forms of PTSD.Our Brain & PTSDPeople with PTSD often experience difficulty with their memory faculty. They often face challenges in recall-ing certain parts of their traumatic event. At times, some of the memo-ries might become more prominent and become constant in the present for people with PTSD. They may face problems in overcoming their response to fear which may be trig-gered by certain thoughts, people or places that are associated with the traumatic event.Three areas of our brain which are effected are the Amygdala (Responsi-ble for processing of emotions), the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (Re-sponsible for processing of fear), and the hippocampus (Long-Term Mem-ory). There is evidence to suggest that Neuro chemical change takes place after a traumatic event. The good news is that any damage caused by traumatic events to our brain, can be reversed with the help of therapy & medication (where necessary).Who all are at risk of developing PTSD?Anyone who has been victimized or has witnessed a violent act, or who has been repeatedly exposed to life-threatening situations is likely to develop PTSD. Any experience which causes the person to feel in-tense fear, horror, or a sense of help-lessness can result in PTSD.What are some of the events which can result in PTSD?· Sexual assault (including arital rape)· Severe beating or physical assault · Hostage victim· Serious accident or injury, for example, car or train accident · Shooting or stabbing · Sudden, unexpected death of family member or friend IN MY OPINIONNO NEED TO RELIVE THE TRAUMA DURING THERAPY WITH MNLP
