siliconindia | | August 20194India experiencing the fastest GDP growth is a good news. But India being crowned as the world's most depressed nation is not the tiara it should wear. However, according to a WHO study conducted for the NCMH (National Care of Mental Health), around 6.5 percent of the country's population suffer from some form of serious mental disorder, while the average suicide rate is 10.9 for every one lakh people, majority of them are below 44 years of age. Yet another report states that out of every five employees of India Inc, one suffers from workplace depression caused due to lack of support systems at both workplace and in personal life. On the other hand, loneliness is much like a passive cigarette smoker, killing you silently. With increasing number of population getting impacted due to some or the other form of mental illness, the need for psychotherapists are on the rise. But to our dismay, the country struggles with the extreme shortage of mental health workers like psychiatrists, psychologists and doctors. The ratio is as low as one in 100,000 people. Though there are several medications to deal with the situation, many antidepressants have major side effects akin to jitteriness, weird dreams, dry mouth, diarrhea, weight gain, lower sex drive, blurred vision and much more. This further creates ruckus in the patient's life, leaving much to deal with. But psychotherapy is gaining more momentum in the current time, where therapy is given more importance than on medication. If you or any of your near ones are suffering from any mental issues, its time you shun the shame and openly discuss the issue before it's too late.
