Bacteria have a reputation for causing disease, hence the idea of pouring down a few billion a day for your health might seem -- literally and figura-tively -- hard to swallow. Since the mid-1990s, clinical studies suggest that probiotic therapy can help treat several gastrointestinal ills, delay the development of allergies in children, and treat & pre-vent vaginal and urinary infections in women.A sharp awareness among the consumers towards the high preva-lence of numerous gastrointestinal ailments is primarily driving the demand for probiotics in India. Moreover, the growing awareness to-wards numerous associated benefits of probiotics in improving gut health and boosting immunity is also propelling the market growth in the country. More so, the expanding geriatric population, who are more prone to chronic gastrointestinal disorders, is acting as a significant growth-inducing factor. Probiotic based animal feeds are also used mainly for maintenance of the equilibrium of the intestinal microbiota of livestock.
