siliconindia | | December 20184With 16 percent year-on-year growth in 2018, India's smartphone users base is just swelling and will reach around 337 million by end of the year and would reach 490.9 million by 2022. There cannot be a better time than now for companies to serve them via this medium. Mobile wallet is one segment that is banking high on this opportunity. It is estimated that digital/mobile wallet in the country will reach $7 billion by 2023 during the period of 2018-2023 (Research And Markets.com). Another study from Globaldata on `Consumer Payments' stated that the adoption of mobile wallets in India is much higher than that in the developed markets like the U.S. and UK, where consumers use plastic cards more often. Not to forget that the much needed fuel to this industry is the Prime Minister Modi's Digital India initiative, which encouraged people to bank, transact and even pay bills online. However, this promising future has a glaring challenge to overcome - the sheer size of the country's population. While few of the digital wallet companies now provide incentives to both consumers and merchants to penetrate the adoption deeper, consumers are still reluctant to use the service due to the leaking security features that have resulted in loss to many. Hence, it is important to have the application built on solid and secure interfaces that will not work in silos but together to make the mode of payment more secure. Featuring some of such companies in our current issue of siliconindia Magazine's `10 Most Promising Digital Wallet Companies - 2018' and `10 Most Promising Price Comparison Portals - 2018', we bring to you the stories of some of the most prominent names of the industry that offer cutting-edge products and solutions and even extending their service provision to reach-out to the rural areas to help local entrepreneurs open digital shops and creating entrepreneurial opportunities for them.
