NOVEMBER 20184The online renting market is all set to change the way we consume goods and services. The global sharing economy was worth $3.5 billion in 2012 and, growing at around 140 per cent CAGR, the industry touched $115 billion in 2016, according to Guru Malladi, Partner at EY, Strategy, Innovation and Digital. As per a PWC report, the rental market will touch $335 billion by 2025 globally. While renting house was a common phenomenon, consumers nowadays are even opting to rent cars, instead of purchasing these. The total market size for India's rental businesses is hard to ascertain as many categories remain fragmented. But experts cumulatively peg three of the top segments furniture, electronic appliances, and motorbikes at over $1.5 billion. The trend is seen more among the young population - thanks to the boom in rental start-ups in the country. A horde of such start-ups have mushroomed in India in the past few years, letting users rent, use and return products at low as five percent of product's actual cost and for any duration. With the rent market now booming, many of these start-ups have adopted various business models and market strategies to get ahead of the curve. While some own all the items they rent out, others source products from third party providers. Interestingly, these start-ups are backed by marquee investors.
