OCTOBER 20204My 55 year old mother is a quintessential Indian home maker. Adamant on ensuring that she get the bang for her every buck, she prefers to scrutinize every single piece of vegetable that makes way into our kitchen. My previous attempts at pushing her to try online grocery delivery were met with a stern, "Only when I buy it on my own can we ensure the quality of our food". Enter the Covid 19 crisis. Forced to stay indoors for months, my mother had to resort to buying our everyday groceries through an online platform. What had started reluctantly soon blossomed into a warm romance. Now I often find my mother scrolling through these virtual isles, picking her favorite grocery items.Sitting in a Tier 2 city in Jharkhand, my mother is one of the many Indian consumers to have warmed up to the idea of online grocery delivery. While the market was on an upswing, yet the growth rate was rather muted. Pre Covid, food and grocery delivery accounted for a measly 0.2 percent of the entire retail market. However, the strict lockdown implemented across the country has provided a massive push to the online grocery delivery market and the industry is slated to see a 76 percent increase in YoY sales. A Forrester research concluded that the industry is slated to make over $3 Billion as compared to $1.7 Billion earned in 2019.Other than amplifying the total sales figures, the pandemic also paved the way for newer players to break in to the grocery delivery market which was earlier ruled by the likes of Big Basket, Groffers or Amazon. The early months of the lockdown saw cab aggregator Uber, food delivery giant Zomato, pizza delivery chain Domino's, e-pharmacy NetMeds and various other players enter the space of grocery delivery.Other than these established names, the market also opened up for hyper local startups that cropped up in various corners of the country. The time is opportune for us to shine the spotlight on such young companies that have turned the pandemic into an opportunity. Not only have these startups leveraged technology but have also understood the very pulse of the market.
