JULY 20184siliconindia | | November 2015123siliconindiaEasy availability of a wide product range at one place and improving logistic services offered by companies are believed to fuel India's online grocery market over the next five years. According to a recently released TechSci Research report, "Online Grocery Market in India By Product Type, Consumer Behaviour, Competition Forecast and Opportunities, 2011 2021", the online grocery market in India is projected to grow at a CAGR of 55 percent during 2016 - 2021. Over the last couple of years, consumers are seeing that online grocery provides some extra benefits over going to kirana stores (independent small grocers) or store-based retailers' outlets. The increasing adoption of online grocery stores is predominantly due to a large base of young consumers forming majority of the workforce with long unpredictable working conditions. Also, the availability of multiple payment methodologies such as online banking, credit cards, debit cards, and cash-on-delivery have meant that it is convenient for urban Indian consumers to shop online while saving both time and money. Online retailers are competing with kirana stores that provide quick (often within an hour) home delivery and credit to neighbourhood consumers.Several start-ups are opening online grocery stores to serve consumer's demand of grocery and at the same time providing them advantage of home delivery and relaxation from standing in long billing queues. Currently, most of the online grocery stores are located in Metro and Tier-I cities, but with increasing incomes and urbanization, they are slowly expanding to Tier-II cities as well. To remain competitive in the market, an increasing number of e-grocers are strategically targeting these markets to increase their footprints in the country.Identifying such forward-looking start-ups, our current edition features "10 Best Startups in Online Grocery." These start-ups are spending heavily on digital marketing to increase their visibility and consumer awareness.
