siliconindia | | July 20184It is no surprise that when we think of our economy's lifeline, we think of Logistics. According to the Economic Survey 2017-18, the country's logistics industry that stands at $160 billion will likely touch $215 billion by 2020 with the implementation of GST, growing at a CAGR of 10.5 percent. Employing over 22 million people, the logistics industry, however, still remains largely unorganized, leading to higher operating costs. However, in the recent times, logistics management is increasingly becoming a topic of interest among academia and practitioners, which will gradually help to not only reduce operational cost, but also enhance delivery performance and increased customer satisfaction levels. This has further streamlined the entire logistics industry comprising of transportation, warehousing, freight forwarding, express cargo delivery, container services, shipping services and several others. Despite holding promise, the logistics sector in India remains mired in several complexities that are holding back its growth, which includes significant inefficiencies in transportation, poor condition of storage infrastructure, complex tax structure, low rate of technology adoption, and poor skills of logistics professionals. Another point that needs immediate attention is the poor condition in which the drivers are forced to drive long routes that leads to shortage of drivers. Though the government has come-up with various initiatives to help improve the condition of the industry, the industry too is working & aligning their vision with the government to provide better working conditions to their workforce, has improved infrastructure, and pass-on the benefit to the customers in terms of money.
