FEBRUARY 20194Over the past year or two, the startup ecosystem in God's Own Country has begun maturing. The ecosystem in Kerala has taken off in terms of the latest developments and incubations across the state. With Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) playing a key role in identifying young talent and nurturing their entrepreneurial dreams, the startup ecosystem has received a major impetus with Kochi emerging as a hub for deep tech companies. One of the primary reasons for its success in developing a growing startup ecosystem is its interlinking of colleges, incubators, government institutes and startups. By focusing on developing entrepreneurial skills at the grassroots level and fostering a DIY (do-it-yourself) culture in schools, in addition to mentoring through various innovation and entrepreneurship development cell in colleges, the state government has successfully brought all the stakeholders under one roof. The Kerala Startup Ecosystem Report reveals that about 37 percent of the startups in the state are based out of Kochi and 23 percent of them are based in Trivandrum. While 35 percent of the startups are said to be focused on providing IT services, 11 percent are working on health tech, and 9 percent are devising ed-tech solutions. In fact, the startup ecosystem at Kerala boasts an even spread of B2B and B2C startups, which comprises 28 percent and 24 percent of the total startups respectively. The role of Government to support this startup revolution has been immense. One of the most important moves by the government has constituted a fund of funds to attract investors and VCs to the state. In fact, the state has come up with a policy where it invests up to 25 percent in an existing fund. It has already constituted its first tranche and Mumbai-based Unicorn India Ventures has already invested in eight of the Kerala-based startups. Noticing such developments, we have featured a list of "10 Most Promising Startups in Kerala". The listed startups function across diverse verticals and show promising growth in the coming years.
