siliconindia | | July 20184Today, India is in the middle of a phenomenal internet boom. According to a report by Mary Meeker, released in 2016, India's internet user growth rate is recorded to be four times that of today's global user growth rate. With nearly 277 million internet users in the moment, India is at the verge of exceeding the US and will stand second only to China. Despite so much noise around the `Digital India' initiative, the urban-rural divide in India is way more acute than it appears when it comes to Internet penetration across the country. As per a study released by the Internet and Mobile Association of India, in December 2017, internet penetration in urban India was at 64.84 percent as compared to 60.6 per cent in December 2016; while the internet penetration in rural India was 20.26 percent in December 2017, registering a growth from 18 percent in 2016. The rapid rise in Internet usage across rural India is a double-barreled game-changer, with up to 300 million Indian consumers expected to be online by 2020.'The Future of Internet in India' report by Nasscom and Akamai Technologies suggests that the number of internet users in India is expected to see a twofold rise at 730 million by 2020 against 350 million at the end of 2015.
