siliconindia | | August 20194In the interim budget this year, the Government of India increased highways budget by six percent and allocated Rs.83,000 crore for 2019-2020. Looking at the pace with which India is growing, both economy and population wise, highways are the need of the hour. Due to easy accessibility, flexibility of operations, door-to-door service and reliability, transportation by road scores massively over other modes of transportation. However, the industry is struggling with shortage of drivers.According to a study by Kantar IMRB and Castrol India, an estimated 28 percent of nearly 8.5 million trucks on road are idling away due to shortage of drivers, apparently accounting to an estimated financial loss of about $60 billion per year. How can this gap be filled? Though cannot be done instantly, the process is evolutionary and needs time to mend the situation. However, smaller but stringent steps are needed, and one of them is providing the drivers the much needed support, respect, increasing earing and favourable working condition.Understanding this need of the hour, many OEMs have incorporated several features in their new trucks, like AC installed driver cabin, power steering, better fuel combustion, anti-skid technology, and several others. On the other hand, GST is speeding-up logistics, leading to increase in daily distance, reduction in maintenance costs and improvement in transportation efficiency. The industry is already realizing the benefits and is moving towards better efficiency and performance. Alongside the hire carrier industry too is experiencing change, where it has moved beyond the core logistics offerings to value added services. No wonder, the country will see a massive growth in for-hire carrier industry due to the features mentioned above.
