The agricultural produc-tion for the year 2017-18 was around 275 million metric tonnes. With this base, we are expected to add around five million tonnes of agro commodi-ties every year and we could achieve a food secure status.However, when we look at income security, farmers are the most insecure lot of the country. As per the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) 2011-12 survey, more than one-fifth of the rural households with agriculture as the primary occupation were below poverty line. 22.5 percent of the farm-ers in India are below poverty line. They are spread across states. While 45 percent of farmers in Jharkhand are below poverty line, Odisha, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh & Madhya Pradesh have 22.5-45 percent farmers in this category. All these decades, we have been focusing on improving the country's farm output to meet our food demands.
