siliconindia | | June 20189In a world that is moving quickly and filled with uncertainty, the need of the hour is to build a culture of trust and ownership to unleash talent, innovation & engagementand will not do with technology. When confronted with so many choices, it is important for us to be very selective. Too often, we spend our innovation on technologies, processes and business rules that do not align with the select things we do that create our differen-tiation in the market. To ensure that this does not happen, we need to de-fine what it is that we do better than anyone else. I use the answers to the following questions to help identify what deserves innovation:a. Who do we serve?b. What do they need and want most?c. What do we do better than anyone else to meet those needs and wants?d. What is the best way for us to deliver what we do better than anyone else?2. We want to focus our innovation only on what we do to create competi-tive advantage. Hence, we want to en-sure, for all those things we do that are mission critical and important but that do not create competitive advantage, we adopt best practices, simplify and standardize. It is highly unlikely that we win in the marketplace because we have found some innovative way to do accounts receivable or accounts pay-able or customer case management or payroll or most of our other process-es. Therefore, just do these things as cleanly as possible. Remember, agil-ity and complexity cannot coexist. Hence, we should do as many things as simply as possible.3. Rethink leadership roles. We tend to believe that a leader is some-one who knows the most, is a subject matter expert or who makes decisions or solves problems. Instead, we need to believe that the primary role of a leader is to create a culture of trust & ownership. In a world that is moving quickly and filled with uncertainty, the need of the hour is to build a culture of trust and ownership to unleash talent, innovation & engagement. These three methods work ev-ery time I have used them. Teams get better results. Employee engage-ment improves. Leaders emerge. Best of all, we position ourselves and our organizations to lead the digital transformation. Niel Nickolaisen
