siliconindia | | October 20194If you think that signing documents electronically is a mere gimmick, think again! In 2017, the worldwide transactions made with e-signatures reached 754 million. MarketsandMarkets predicts the global digital signature market to grow to $5.5 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 36.7 percent, while countries like India and China are expected to register a CAGR of 31 percent during 2018-2023. Small sized companies will be much benefited from this move when the paperwork bottlenecks will be eliminated by automating document workflows across departments. On the other hand, with the push towards digitalization, India is already clearing the roadblocks to apt inclusion of digital signature in every business. But the fear of being hacked still persists in the market. In mid-2017, DocuSign was hacked by unnamed third-party, which got access to the email addresses of millions of its users. Though the company quickly blocked unauthorized access to the system, the damage was already done. In another instance, a group of academics from the German Ruhr-University Bochum in Germany devised three PDF signature spoofing attack techniques, namely Universal Signature Forgery, Incremental Saving Attack and Signature Wrapping Attack. Using them, the experts demonstrated that almost any PDF viewer that was analysed and online validation services were vulnerable to the attack methods. Also, the vulnerabilities can be exploited to make unauthorized changes to signed PDF documents without validating their digital signature. Indeed terrifying moments for the digital signature industry as the war between black and white is creating newer stories each day.
