siliconindia | | MAY 20194Can you remember who were the earliest biotechnolo-gists? No? To your surprise, they were the farmers who developed advanced species of plants and animals with a simple process - cross-pollenization or cross-breed-ing. Moving beyond farming, biotechnology is ready to greatly influence our lives in the coming years. From agriculture biotechnology, medical biotechnology, animal biotechnology, forest biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, environmental biotechnol-ogy, to plant biotechnology, biotechnology is the future that will help us better our health, environment and food. India being the world's largest producer of recombinant Hepatitis B vaccine, world's largest BT cotton producer, and having world's second highest number of USFDA approved plants, is poised to take the industry to a whopping $100 billion by 2025. India's Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council's (BIRAC) focus has been the creation of a biotechnology startup ecosystem in the country by providing funding to early stage ideas through grants, creation of bio-incubators at strategic locations and extend mentorship & networking opportunities to startups. With numerous comparative advantages like R&D facilities, knowledge, skills, and cost effectiveness, the Indian biotechnology industry is poised to emerge as a global key player. To achieve this, the GoI has even established the Department of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science & Technology. No wonder, the country is a flourishing destination for the global biotechnology companies and researchers to come and explore the potential. In our current issue of siliconindia Healthcare's `10 Most Promising Biotechnology Companies 2019', we have featured some of the indigenous biotechnology companies creating global products.
