About Auburn University
Auburn University was established in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, 20 years after the city of Auburn's founding. In 1872, under the Morrill Act, the school became the first land-grant college in the South and was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1899 the name again was changed, to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Finally, in 1960 the name of the school was changed to Auburn University, a title more in keeping with its location, and expressing the varied academic programs and larger curriculum of a major university.
Today, Auburn is one of the few universities to carry the torch as a land, sea and space grant university. Our Fall 2010 semester enrollment was 25,078. Our students can choose from more than 140 degree options in 13 schools and colleges at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.
Auburn University has developed into one of the largest universities in the South, remaining in the educational forefront with its traditional blend of arts and applied science, and changing with the needs of today while living with a respect for the traditions and spirit that are Auburn.
Colleges and Schools
College of Business:The college offers undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Students may select from twelve professional options including accountancy, aviation management, professional flight management, supply chain management, finance, international business, business administration, entrepreneurship & family business, human resource management, management, information systems management, and marketing.
In addition, the College offers graduate work for the degrees of Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science (MS) in Business Administration, Master of Accountancy (MAc), and the Doctor of Philosophy in Management. For the degree of Master of Science in Business Administration (MSBA), which includes a non-thesis option as well, finance is the sole concentration available at this time. Students may also enroll in the Masters of Science in Management Information Systems (MSIS) program.
Samuel Ginn College of Engineering:Auburn University has been offering engineering courses since 1872 and has a long and rich tradition of excellence in engineering education. Our undergraduate enrollment for fall 2009 is 3,598 and graduate 754.

School of Nursing:The Auburn University School of Nursing (AUSON), established in 1979, is one of the newest of Alabama's nine publicly supported baccalaureate nursing programs. As such, the School has a responsibility to prepare nurses to deliver health care services in diverse settings in the state and region and to provide leadership in health education and research for the University and the state. Since many of the rural counties surrounding Auburn University are designated as medically undeserved areas, the Auburn University School of Nursing also assumes responsibility for improving health care access and upgrading primary, secondary and tertiary health services for undeserved populations.
Harrison School of Pharmacy:The study of Pharmacy at Auburn University began in 1885 when the Board of Trustees of the (then) Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College proposed that a course of study be offered in pharmacy. For the first ten years students were able to take preparatory courses in alkaloids, assaying, and some toxicology.
College of Veterinary Medicine:Just as home prepares you for life, Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine aims to prepare its graduates for a variety of career paths and experiences in veterinary medicine. When you think of your days in veterinary school, from learning all facets of animal health, to studying more specific medical conditions and treatments, I hope you think of it as a time when you were prepared well for the days ahead.
