Bangalore: The world went online with Apple as iOS represented more than half of the online mobile devices in 2011.

The latest report from the Net Applications based on Mobile Web Browsing data showed that 52.01 percent of the mobile web browsing in December 2011 was done in iOS devices. iPhone contributed a 25.24 percent where iPad and the iPod account to 24.53 and 2.32 percent respectively.

Androids share grew from a 12.75 percent and it finished third covering 16.2 percent behind the Java ME at 21.27 percent. Nokia’s Symbian covered 5.76 percent followed by Blackberry with 3.51. Microsoft’s Windows Phone was nowhere in the scene and that category including “others” contributed to remaining 1.07 percent of the market share.

iOS began the year with a market share of 54.07 percent which witnessed its dip to a 46.57% in February and  peak at 61.50% in October 2011 followed by the launch of iPhone 4S.

The data given by survey is interesting as it is contradictory to reports that stated android as the leading OS. The handset sales and activations also justify the androids market share.

According to the report, the result may be a reflection of the Apple’s service methodology or it could be the result of a smooth, polished and better browser that iOS offers than the fairly good android browser.
