 RIM unhappy with competitors profiting
Bangalore: The BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has accused that competitors have tried to profit from regulatory scrutiny the company faces in India by suggesting that RIM will be singled out by Indian regulators. The company has once again made it clear that the Indian government has assured RIM that it will not be singled out by any policy on how products and services that use encryption are regulated. "Some of RIM's competitors have attempted to compound and profit from the confusion by suggesting or implying that RIM's BlackBerry Enterprise Server software will be singled out by Indian regulators," the company said in the e-mailed statement. The statement is thought to be aimed at several other companies who uses the encryption software in their products and services in India including Google Technology, Cisco Systems, Apple etc. Releasing a customer update, RIM debunked the reports that January 31 was the deadline to provide access to communications on BES to Indian law enforcement agencies. This was a mutually agreed target date between the company and the government to provide a solution to the Indian carriers for lawful access to RIM's consumer messaging services. However, many other countries have threatened to close down BlackBerry services over its consumer messaging services, which the governments fear can be used to cause social unrest or coordinate terrorist attacks. RIM still stands by its decision that it cannot technically provide access to its corporate service, but the Indian government in firm on having access to communications on BES through mobile service providers.
