Youngsters to lead India's tech revolution

Thursday, 06 August 2009, 04:08 Hrs
Washington: Saying that the U.S. needs to wake up to the reality of India's technological revolution being led by IIT-educated "young men and women under the age of 27", President Barack Obama's nominee for deputy commerce secretary said countries like India, China, Brazil and Russia were going to pose a major challenge to American dominance in the coming years.
Youngsters to lead India's tech revolution

"Today, we find ourselves competing not only with companies of great capacity, but countries intent on establishing dominance in the growth areas of the 21st century," Dennis Hightower, Obama's nominee for deputy secretary of commerce, said at his confirmation hearing Wednesday.

"Countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China -- often referred to as the BRIC countries -- are now employing aggressive industrial policies reminiscent of Japan's strategic commitment to the electronics industry in the 1960s," he said.

Referring to his recent business travels in India, Hightower said he was "floored by that country's commitment to reinvesting in technology and the implications for the United States".

Visiting "a veritable who's who of global technology giants" in Bangalore, the would-be Obama official said he "was struck not only by the technological inroads being made in newly designed, avant-garde factories and laboratories, but also by the fact that this technological revolution was often being led by young men and women under the age of 27.

"By and large, these young people were not educated in the United States like many of their fathers -- at MIT, Cal Tech, or Rennselaer, for example -- but at the Indian Institutes of Technology."

Hightower noted there are "projections that place the United States in fourth place over the next 15-20 years in terms of consumerism, manufacturing capacity, and the growth of an entrepreneurial base that keeps pace with new global developments and delivery systems."

"This forecasted outcome, to my way of thinking, is unacceptable," he said stressing "we must re-establish the primacy of the United States as the world leader in innovation, creativity and excellence across the global economic spectrum.

"If America expects to lead, we must put our best minds on the toughest problems -- reforming the way America uses healthcare, consumes energy and educates our children," Hightower said.

"America must now act with a renewed sense of urgency" he said, as "our global competitors are neither standing still nor shy about taking action to exert their global economic ambitions".

1: What President Obama fails to realize is that the Indian "tech revolution" was sponsored by the United States. Sorry, but facts are facts. Had it not been for fledgling efforts at outsourcing Customer Service and later, Systems Maintenance, the BRIC countries would not have stood a snowball's chance in hell of staging "tech revolutions".

2: IITians of the yesteryears have been gr8... no doubt about that... I salute those greats... but let us not forget we had only IITs then to offer proper engineering education... When the US official used the name IITs, he addressed it as Technology institutes in India... IITs have been used here to represent the Indian Techno people... IITs and IIMs are nowhere bringing any new talent... Problem is We don't have people turning to become faculty... only people who fail to get jobs are going into education system as lecturers... Though there may still be good teachers... The overall standard of Teaching staff is falling... Education should and Teaching should be the best profession... but Government needs to take steps towards that to make indian institutes a better place...
I think you guys would agree on this... We need good people not to teach but nurture the future talent...

3:This right not just 100% but 200% what IndianEducationNeedsRevamp has said. What are we going to do about it. Forget what the government is going to do about it. If we rely on Govt Not even in 2050 we be super power. And what i'm saying is again a fact. So we will for sure have to change this. i am there for it. after my work as Soft Engg for sure i will be in a college teaching computers. How many can join me?

12: It is a total misconception that IITs and IIMs and other sc-called elite colleges are the only places of intellect in India. They are simply placed as superior intelligent and the rest of the crowd are seen as simpletons. Once I went to the proximity of such an elite national college. The locals there were induced to a level of inferiority complex by the immensity of resources and infrastructure unloaded there. It is not correct to use national wealth to induce such inferiority complex on the rest of the citizens here. As to the IIT and IIM graduates contributing to the improvement of the quality of the common man here, there is no such evidence. They just land up in superior stations in corporate sector and use the same feudal words to induce similar inferiority on their working class, or else they all escape to English nations, after swallowing national wealth for a number of years. What is required is not a 'brahmin' class here, but dissemination of quality for all. Let primary schools be given superior quality teachers, who can give the children good English and good personal development. Currently, primary classes in most places are run by 'ayah' class teachers. As to the English nations trembling at the prospect of IIT and IIM graduates coming into dominance, let me say with conviction that even a servant in any Indian home if given the chance to go to any English nation will show fantastic personal development. I have seen it for myself. As to these IIT and IIM graduate having superior intelligence, it is a myth. I know some of them, and they are well-informed, but there are many like them, who also are equivalent, but do not have so much national resources uploaded on them.
Another thing, all this talk of competition is only that of robbing jobs in English nations, and of working and living in India. All the nations mentioned, like China, Brazil and the rest are going to be the problem for India, if is aims to prosper with such robbing. It shall be a fight among them to get the best vantage position to rob English nation jobs.

16: According to Matthew Ohland, an associate professor in Purdue University's School of Engineering Education. " Engineering students are amazingly like those in other disciplines, but we need to do more to attract students to engineering programs," "If you look at who graduates with a degree in social sciences, 50 percent of them started in social sciences, and for other sciences it's about 60 percent. If you look at who graduates with a degree in engineering, however, 93 percent of them started in engineering. The road is narrow for students to migrate into engineering from other majors."Findings were drawn largely from a database that includes 70,000 engineering students from nine institutions in the southeastern United States. Ohland manages the database, called the Multiple-Institution Database for Investigating Engineering Development, which followed students over a 17-year period ending in 2005.Data show that the nine institutions vary dramatically in how well they retain engineering students over eight semesters, ranging from 66 percent to 37 percent. Those findings indicate policies and practices at some institutions may serve to retain students better than those at other institutions. The findings suggest educators should develop a two-pronged approach to increase the number of engineering graduates: identify which programs best retain students and determine why they are effective, and develop programs and policies that allow students to more easily transfer into engineering from other majors.

17: I absolutely agree with the fact that our political system has been at loggerheads with the educational system in order to wipe out the only enemy which stands between india and development. Development as in 100% literacy(not by distributing or reading bollywood magazines laced with plagiaristic contents), Development doesn't mean bringing down the standard of merit in any educational institutes by employing reservations. This is something which needs to be wiped out at the grassroot level. Reservation should be for the under-priviledged of the society irrespective of caste, whereas over here our votebank oriented politicians(the real culprits and friction in the path of development) are hell bent upon destroying merit. Two students hailing from sound financial backgrounds face discrimination at the entrance level tests, one who misses out the cutoff by a whisker and has to adjust with a second string college, but another, though affluent, since is stamped as belonging to reserved category would be allowed entry despite gfailing miserably in the tests. This is gross injustice towards a merit based system.Development doesn't mean allowing any tom dick or harry to contest the polls, irrespective of his academic or civil record and then citing english as the root cause of corruption and under-development, another is building statues worth crores of tax payer's money and even the apex body of justice in the country stands helpless and on top of it citing it. Development doesn't mean hiding india's rich history and propagating lies in the form of history syllabus, thereby making a grevious error. History is actually a reflection of our civilisation displayed to us on the mirror of time.

The US is in a precarious position now facing crisis right away but i feel it is devoid or has less number os nblood sucking leeches at its governing helm both at the natioanl and state level. The foundation is still strong and it woulnd't be late for them to adopt the very models employed by the IITs and IIMs, the beacons of education and enlightenment in our country and start with a new vigor. On the contrary if we don't rid our social, political and educationsl structure of the ever increasing number of viruses, w would face if not the similar but many crisis of sorts in the future. Its high time india truly wakes to a bitter reality and be more visionary and not focussed on myopic gains and bath in the shower of praises. Arise awake and rest not till we achieve a true and developed india, independent in the truest of sense.Jai Hind

20: No matter what, IF US don't produce young graduates there are millions of graduates are ready to migrate. US can get them without spending single penny for working. US will continue to dominate and Countries like India is always follow them.
Ofcourse IIT ians are more capable and there is no place in India they can use their high skills. Every where curruptions. People are so liberal don't follow any rule. Any one can make mistake and get can around it. And most of the mistake is forgiven if he does some thing good later.

For example
A rowdy in Tamil Nadu become DCM and get Doctorate in Anna University
A person who financial help help(kovi bom blast madhani) A kunda, gang leader is Union Minister of Agriculture.
A currption leader is Union Minister of IT
People take Money for voting.
Any rich man/political man cannot get punished if he do a mistake.
Criminals are doing mistake/curruption knowing that they can escape from it.

STATE OF TAMIL NADU IS FULL OF UNPATRIATIC CITIZENS AND THE STAT IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION.

27: May I ask Mr Hightower (how appropiate!) - What is the problem if US is 4th in the world in some respects? It is just this kind of attitude to be on top of everyone that brings trouble to one and all - where is the peace and harmony?
Posted by: Subhash Bose - 06 Aug, 2009

28: Good eye-opener for Americans. The crux of the problem is two-fold - 1: Americans have a sagging will to learn especially in high-tech fields, as they tend to seek more easier pastures like Marketing, Sales, HR and around Communications/Media. 2: America offers too much pleasure to make one burn mid-night oil for too long. The partying and the dating all add up to loss of competitiveness.

It is a real pity as some of the best facilities for learning, all kinds of resources, are still very much an American monopoly. Foreign students make the most of it, especially in the early years of stay.

But yet it looks like the US will be losing competitiveness in almost all fields over the next couple of decades as learning leadership will pass to other countries. I guess the learning field has become more level - thus making it more of a "free for all".
