Yahoo search BOSS: No longer free of cost

Bangalore: Yahoo releases the upcoming pricing for Yahoo BOSS (Build your Own Search Service), open search web service platform to strengthen Yahoo's infrastructure.

The pricing is set on two standards: 'Full web' (unlimited search) includes result links to web pages, images and news article and will charge $0.80 per 1,000 searches. 'Limited web' (limited search) will cost $0.40 per 1,000 searches. Users will have options of image-only index that will charge them $0.30 per 1,000 searches and news-only index will cost $0.10 per 1,000 searches.

Interested advertisers and developers will be given guidance and assistance if they will be interested in running search. "Our goal is to provide a product that allows you to build sustainable businesses via interesting cloud-based search technology at a fair cost. In addition, we encourage BOSS developers to monetize your products using Yahoo Search advertising," wrote Rahul Hampole, BOSS Team in a blog post.

The goal of BOSS is to foster innovation in the search industry. Developers, start-ups and large internet companies can use BOSS to build and launch. In December 2008, five months after BOSS' launch, Yahoo announced that BOSS is getting 10 million queries per day on an average, which breaks down to about 100 queries per second. During that time, Yahoo Developer Network website said that monetizing options for BOSS are in the works for 2009. Last year in October Yahoo announced that the previously free BOSS would shift to a fee-based model in 2011.

Microsoft will take care of the self service sales of pay per click text search ads. Yahoo will be handling advertisers, resellers, search marketing firms and their clients while taking charge of the premium, guaranteed-placement search ads.
