According to Yahoo, Facebook is completely based on Yahoo’s patented social networking technology."Yahoo recognized the importance of social interaction on the Internet and developed technology that allows users to customize information about themselves, join groups of others with the same interests as theirs, and share interesting information," states the lawsuit.
Company added that “for much of the technology upon which Facebook was based, Yahoo was there first.”
Yahoo’s decision to sue Facebook just when it is set to go public trace back to the same strategy company used back in 2004- a decision to sue Google just before it filed for its IPO for allegedly infringing patents. The dispute was later settled by licensing agreement. But in the case of Facebook, Yahoo went to say that royalty payments alone will not be sufficient.
