Bangalore:According to a United Nations Report Women constitute 52 percent of the total population of Zimbabwe and make up 16 percent of Zimbabwe's cabinet, 18 percent of Parliament and 19 percent of local government.

This was noted in contrast to the 2011 elections in Tunisia which have been labelled a battleground for women's rights where the fairer sex proved that they are in no terms less than men as 50 percent of the candidates was women. Zimbabwe is one of the eight countries that signed and ratified the SADC Gender and Development Protocol which stipulates that women should hold 50 percent of decision-making positions, for both public and private sectors.

Virginia Muwanigwa, Executive Director of the Humanitarian Information Facility Centre feels that due to lack of women representatives in the key ministries the concerns of women are never taken care of because a woman can better understand the feeling of other women.

The Constitution and the Electoral Act although promote women's political rights but have no specific provisions to increase women's representation in Parliament. This has hampered efforts by women to compete in an environment dominated by men; so now it';s the time for women to forget their political party differences and to unite together with more self confidence to prove that the highest political office is not the preserve of men, unless they allow it.

After Rwanda surpassed the 50 percent target of women in parliament there were success stories of women recorded everywhere in Africa. Netsai Mushonga Coordinator of the Women Coalition of Zimbabwe quoted "There can be no democracy without the free participation of women,"
