BANGALORE: Wipro Ltd, India’s third-largest software exporter, announced a strategic alliance with Sweden based SmartTrust to seek a hot new segment in telecommunications, its largest specialization area. Under this scheme, Wipro would add people to develop device management software for SmartTrust so that mobile handsets can get content and application better and telecom companies can get mobile device management solutions faster. A.L. Rao, President of Bangalore based Wipro's telecom business said the outsourcing deal with SmartTrust was strategic for Wipro in that it was almost like adding a new line. “We have handset hardware and telecom equipment and this is widening our service delivery platform.” No financial details were given. New York Stock Exchange listed Wipro, which employs about 5,000 people in its telecom business will provide software development and testing services, according to the terms of the agreement. “The relationship now involves a dedicated team jointly planning product development and could expand to include solution deployment,” Rao said. Officials of privately held SmartTrust, whose software helps telecom service providers cater for customers using a variety of handsets, will employ 30 experts in Wipro by the end of this year to join its 57-strong product engineering team. "The demand for device management solutions is ballooning as the problems become more complex," said Paul Cuss, chief executive officer of SmartTrust. More than 170 mobile networks around the world already use SmartTrust technology to better manage subscribers, their devices and access to services, Cuss added.
