BANGALORE: Wipro, one of India's largest software companies, is foraying into office modular furniture and LED (light emitting diodes)-based lighting products. The company's consumer care and lighting division, which will handle the new business, said it saw a lot of synergy between the two products. "Since we have been dealing in lighting for long, we see a lot of business potential in promoting it with furniture," Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting president Vineet Agarwal told reporters here Tuesday. "Instead of going to different vendors for both, customers can rely on us for providing lighting and furniture under one roof." The division has three captive vendors for supplying modular furniture. It plans to rope in more once business picks up. Wipro estimates the present market size for modular office furniture to be around 5.5 billion ($124 million) and growing at about 30 percent annually. "We have already installed over 6,000 workstations for Wipro as well as 14 other customers in Bangalore. We have invested in a space planning and product design team," Agarwal said. As LED technology is yet to take off in India, the company will initially resort to concept selling. "Commercial acceptability of LED is gaining ground. Though it is being used in cell phones and traffic signals, we feel it can be used for outdoors, facades and landscapes too," Agarwal said. Set to be the future of lighting, LED can be used for creating special effects in both interior and exterior workspaces. As part of its annual Light Show, the company is showcasing products for outdoor landscape applications, including a new range of architectural streetlights, Fantasy Heritage and Pathways to light up exterior workspaces. For the July-September quarter, Wipro consumer care and lighting business posted 1.2 billion ($27 million) revenue with a profit-before-tax of 161 million ($3.6 million).
