Bangalore: IT solutions provider Wipro Infotech has been awarded a nine-year outsourcing deal by Aircel, a leading mobile telephony services player, the $3.5-billion IT bellwether said here on Thursday. The long-term deal involves Wipro transforming Aircel's operations by delivering a future-ready IT platform and deploying best practices and tools for offering its subscribers a seamless service spanning voice, data and multimedia content. "We will deliver next generation business transformation to Aircel by creating a futuristic platform for providing leading-edge services and new experience to its customers," Wipro Infotech president Suresh Vaswani said in a statement. The new architecture will enable Aircel to launch the next generation of services such as 3G, WiMax and mobile TV. With an estimated subscriber base of 9.5 million, the Chennai-based Aircel operates in 10 circles across the country. It also has licenses to expand its presence in 13 additional circles over next 18-24 months. Both companies, however, did not disclose the value of the contract. Aircel has also restructured its operations for a pan-India presence and realigned its business plans to capitalise on the growing demand in cellular services. "The strategic alliance with Wipro will give us an opportunity to make an impact in the expanding telecom market. There is a great similarity in the approach of the two partners towards innovation and delivery of superior experience to customers," Aircel CEO Sandip Das said.
