Will foreign varsities poach IIT, IIM profs?

Mumbai: The meagerly paid professors at the country's top academic institutes may soon be poached by foreign universities after the government cleared a proposal to allow foreign universities to set up campuses in India. This step is expected to provide quality education in the country and reduce the flow of Indian students abroad.
The bill, which will now be tabled in parliament for its approval, has provisions to regulate the entry and operation of foreign institutions, which will set up campus and offer degrees in India. "This is a milestone, which will enhance choices, increase competition, and benchmark quality," Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Thousands of Indian students go to the U.S., Britain and Australia among other countries, every year, to study in foreign universities. The effort is part of the central government's continued focus on education reform. Sibal, who sounded elated Monday, has been pushing for this since he took over the ministry last year. The minister, too, has been in touch with several top universities in the U.S. and Britain about such a move. Among the foreign universities likely to set up shop in India are Boston University, Harvard and Yale University from the U.S.

6: This is a welcome move. With foreign
universities coming in we surely will have
access to better curriculum and application
of the subjects that we have been mugging up
so far.
Coming to the the faculty that we may loose... Wont really matter since better, more professional people would come into the system. Emphasis would be on studies and application.

18: I think Mr Kapil Sibbal wants to ruin our
Govt. run education system. We have seen what
had happened to our Govt. schools there are
teachers but no students. Even the schools
have no infrastructure,but govt. pays
salaries to the staff(overhead). People are
putting children in private schools as they
provide education atleat. Now with foreign
universities coming even our IIM and IITs
will face this .
But Mr Sibal and his family will become financially sound as his foreign bank accounts will get filled. We the Indians will be loosing on competition with ourselves and foreign players are taking away our earnings. Mr Sibal want to bring in competition for IIMs and IITs instead he seeding the death of them.

/Institutions. Since they will be brought
under private University, reservation will
not be followed and hence seats can be filled
on the basis of merit.

the UK, the minimum wages for manual labour:
UK New National Minimum Wage rates from 1
October 2008
Workers aged 22 and over - £5.73 per hour. That is roughly around 1500 pounds per month. But this is the minimum wages. Actual wages are much higher.
In UK, for a lecturer the salary is around 2500 pounds per month. For a professor it is 3750 pounds per month. At best 2 times an ordinary labourer's wages.
What is the ratio of the wages of an Indian labourer and that of these 'meagerly' paid professors over here? Who is authorizing this loot?
In India if a labourer gets 2500 to 4000 rupees per month, these 'intelluctual giants' get at least 10 times of that, and that too for 13 months a year. Plus faboulous pension also for themselves alone. In UK everyone is covered under the social security scheme, which is adequate to keep body and soul together.

they are opening up more IIT's and IIM's and

Universities with excellent systems and processes will come to India to enter into the fray. Becuase they know that India has cheap labour and many Educational Institutions are flourishing because of the same reason. These are being run by many politicians of the country. They will have to earn their money because of increased competition.

global universities opening their campuses in
India. As far as poaching of the Profs is
concerned, why cann\\\'t IIT\\\'s and IIMs
too start paying their Profs at part with
world standard. Are these institutions there
just to make pile of profit and not to invest
in the interest of students? It is to be
noted that these ace institutes are not doing
any charity. Moreover, if they are facing
cash crunch, ministry can cough-up a part of
the money they will be getting from the
foreign varsities.
I see a bigger question here. Govt of India charges higher education cess on every kind of tax. This must be a huse sum of money every year. If on the name of reforms in higher education, govt is inviting foreign universities, then which become a profit center for the govt together with fulfilling their promises of reforms, what would the Govt do with the huge amount collected as higher education cess?
Can someone ask for the income/expense in this regard.

It will only increase education opprotunities
in India. And if we talk about university

handfull of universities like IITs, NITs,

Professors are low paid but make up by
consulting and serving on corporate boards,
at the expense of research that would really

faculty is poorly paid but in return they are
offered life time job security with little
requirement by way of productivity, teaching
or research, leading to abysmal productivity,
especially in terms of research.

Years ago people said that opening up markets in India would doom the local businesses. Look at what has happened: the local business is thriving IN SPITE of competition from international companies. Look especially at the automotive sector.
When sufficiently challenged, Indians will always rise to the occasion to make us all proud. When insufficiently challenged, we Indians go to sleep or just goof off.
A long time ago, Milton Friedman asked the rhetorical question: Indian diaspora does so well even in treacherous environments (like in South Africa of those days). So, why is it that Indians in India do so poorly? Of course, the rhetorical answer is that government regulations have been like an albatross around our necks.
These "foreign" universities will give the Indian educational academic establishment a run for their money, and I am sure they'll come out ahead.

quality of education in US is not good and

costs. The downturn in the economy is a

privatization in education has always
resulted in school shops which are geared
towards exploiting people and leaving them no

It is all monopolization, where the commons

Talk about fees for instance.. in foreign universities there are companies that actually pay for the education and more than often they endup absorbing the students into their own establishment and even give them opportunities to prosper.
We have always said that the basic education is the best in India.. Isnt this a golden opportunity to exploit what the rest of the world has to offer and tailor it to Indian needs wherein everybody is benefited? After all arent we Indians a major portion of every successful companys brain.
I definitely encourage this move and would like to see this implemented in the right fashion.. After all a little more knowledge does not hurt rite

perfect move because it will solve many
issues in the current system, some of which
are :
1 -> The professors will be paid well thereby encouraging more professors to work in India. Currently there is a huge shift of faculty across borders.
2 -> People with experience should pursue Business study, else we have half baked breads lecturing about cakes and pastries. The criteria for entry to business education will get refined.
3 -> No more wrong propaganda will be done. The monopoly of IIMs and the safeguarding of reputation leads to false information and this will be restricted. Hardly 10% IIM graduates have got packages more than 20 lakhs. People will know it through the same media soon.
The taxation for foreign universities should nevertheless be kept under control, less money should be let to flow outside and more reinvestment should be encouraged for foreign universities. This will eventually evolve.
I feel proud India is moving ahead.

to set up shop here is going to push some of
our so called premier institutes to perform

We all know how much investment is done in Indian vs International varsities. While we are waking up to corporate partnerships for projects, the kind of projects we do at some of our colleges to get Engineering/ MBA degrees still have a lot to be desired.
Sometimes, a healthy competition is better. Look at Telecom industry for example. While an Indian company started it, the advent of international companies brought better technology, better plans and resulted in better overall standards.

and w r t ur education in US... i am a masters graduate too and I do agree that our standards are below par.. but you have to understand that education is a luxury for majority of the people here in the US.. how many people do you know that have pursued Masters or gone further...
I know there have been a handful during my course.. rest of the students were actually thinking of stopping their UG courses.. it makes it all the more easy for any company to focus on a couple of indivduals.. make up the research and absorb them into main stream..

passed by the parliament this year. Indians
deserves healthy competition in higher
education arena where real quality can be
apprpriately identified and recognized. The
students deserve better
universities/professors and certainly the
Professors deserve better salary
structure/incentives. Hopefully there will be
some poaching not just in the IITs and IIMs,
but also in other high quality institutes.
This will force the overall system to better
recognize and reward the Professors, which in
turn will attract the right high quality
talent for these positions. This will ensure
that the students get better Professors. It
is a win-win proposition for people who vote
for better quality and accountability in the
education sector of India.

We are discussing about competation in higher education system but so far very less number of expressed about the concern of primary and secondry level of education govt scools faild to provoid good education so that we can see students persue higher education. now a days child will take admission in govt school whose parent can't afford daily food so we need good amont of research for provoiding quality education Govt schools and this can happen vaulantary approch of Teachers, we will see many teachers get govt jobs and forget for what reason they are paid for for there rest of life i have seen the so called teachers in a village who came to scools with drunk and imagine a student age of 9 to 10 can learn with this. first we have remove these fellows and give good healthy education to all the childrens of india then imagine the comptation what we get for talents i am sure all of can generate new ideas same indian kids get good recognisation. all i can say is still discremination is happening here. those who have good money can afford good education poor remains poor only, as long as we dont think for all we can't achive succuss. and i think our intelectuals are thinking about only metros and growing cities and what about students who are studing villages in Govt schools.

I understand IIT's, CSIR labs etc., are initiated through give push to research. Except few CSIR labs, all others proved to be great failure.
IIT's become UG production units.
In this respect, I shall congrachulate ISRO for its sucess stories.
I strongly feel that GOVT should see Science Research to be culiminated in India. Probably, these Foreign Univ can be advised to build state of art Science Research centers at the first instance. THis may help India a lot.

qualified faculty. See any of their website
and look at faculty for B.E. or MCA you'll

Now let us anlyse one by one.
syllabus:this should reflect the latest trends in the technology and at ug level should cover the fundamentals elaborately.To achieve this,it is only enough if we have a tie up with foreign universities.
faculty:it is not practical to import the professors from such universites to india.majority would not like to migrate leave alone cost of their maintenance.the other possibility is to hire indian porfessors from other reputed organisations.in the process our own institutions will lose their eminent faculty and the quality will go down.Instead our existing universities may bring guest faculty periodcally to imprvwe the quality of teaching.
Infrasrtucture:It is no way possible to create infrastructure at par with those available in reputed overseas universites.These universites evolve the present infrastructure over a period of many decades.Even assuming it is possible it will take many years and at a very heavy cost.
Therefore it is wise and quick to enter into collaborations with leading international universities and improve our quality of education.
However,all these will bear fruit only if the employment levels in our country improves considerably to absorb most of these students.otherwise the craze for overseas studies will continue to remain as the prospect of better employment and living conditions in these countries are better.
