Will Indian women break the glass ceiling?

By Zoya Anna Thomas,Thursday, 14 May 2009, 05:54 Hrs
Bangalore: The women workforce in the IT-BPO sector has increased to 60 percent in the last two years, as per a study conducted on gender inclusivity in India by NASSCOM, in collaboration with HR consulting firm Mercer. The numbers have doubled, since last year and it is reported that only 20 percent women constitute the IT workforce. This seems to be a positive sign, since gender inclusivity has always been an issue in India. The survey covered over 45 technology companies in India.
Will Indian women break the glass ceiling?

The gender inclusivity initiatives taken by various IT companies have helped in getting the women workforce. Tapasya Syal, who has been working in the IT sector for the past four years and is currently an employee at Infosys, Chandigarh, says, "I have certainly seen a number of changes over the past four years. For instance, companies have become more flexible, when it comes to work timing for women."

However, some feel that these privileges don't come easily. Dr Sudha Selvarajan, General Manager at MindTree says, "I think a lot more is due for us. People expect us to fight it out to get privileges and not because we deserve it. There is certainly an increase in the women workforce at our organization, but this isn't a huge increase. While earlier around 20 percent of them were women, now it must have gone up to 27 percent." She feels that it will take a lot more time for women to get the recognition they deserve. The individual, the organization, the society and the country wholly needs to make a coordinated effort in order to ensure greater empowerment of women.

Startup companies have their own problems when it comes to employing women. Sadhna Sanjeev, Director- Finance & HR of Medsphere Technologies, a startup company, says, "Smaller organizations don't have enough facilities to provide proper inclusivity for women. In our organization only 20 to 30 percent workers are women." However she is positive, that the situation will get better with time and effort.

The survey also says that, out of the 400 million workforce in India, 30-35 percent are female and only one-fifth of them work in urban areas.

Although there has been a 60 percent increase in women workforce in the IT and BPO sector, (the maximum being in BPO's) the question is, how many of these women make it to the senior management level or break the glass ceiling?

1: So more divorces, more women get financial indepntant. More living together and No marriages. Good for Indian culture as it is getting destroyed. More womens go to pufffs as Renuka choudhry goes.

2: Nice article Soya. Deserves attention of HR managers and Operations controllers. Our political leaders and cops also need to dwell on the issue.
It is seen that women are more suitable than men for BPO jobs. They are more sincere and reliable too. However there are natural cyclic weaknesses, maternity related issues and social issues which adversely effect them more in comparison with men. A supportive family is very crucial for they are earning for the family. It is for the mothers, mother-in-laws and husbands to give them the due support. The security enviornment in the city will have a direct impact on the proportion of women employed. The govt need to give companys incentives for employing women to compensate for maternity leave related losses as welfare measure of women and children. After all nurturing the kids are a state responsibility too.
Women who do not look forward to mercy or compassion and concentrate on proffession break the imaginary glass cealings. However it is the duty of a good corporate leader to give due consideration to women folk under him. It is also for the women to give their best to the company.
There cannot be a joyous society without happy women folk.

5: I am aware the dificulties they have to go through, I do not want them to work at odd hours. This in my opinion disturbs the whole family- which is the core & strength of India. ant our men capable enough to brave the work at nights & keep their wives & sisters safe & sound to nurture futer indians & work at day times?...

6: The Indian Women have evolved from Centuries, and braving the Socio-Political conditions in India, she had developed very strong and positive personality. In the resultant they are more patient and oopertunistic than Man today.I think it is good if they take up India's name higher in Global Businees world scenario today.

7: Does anyone have statistics on whether Indian women pay scale is on par with the men? Most of the world including US women are paid at least 20% less compared to their counterparts.

8: hw chauvinist u ppl can be.gauge the truth people.accdng to me this shift in trend is a good thing.women have good multi-tasking skills.as we know since the historical times while t men were out gathering food, the woman had to take care of household things, mind the kids,n a lot other things....so now she can put those genetically instilled skills to use in the corporate world....

all other constraints are obvious.
i think you people should stop concluding things on the very outset and look beyond the picture.

peace.

so now

9: The statistics provided were really enlightening. There has been a sea change in the recent past in the attitude towards women at the work place. I don't see much difficulty for a committed and sincere woman employee to break the glass ceiling. The ceiling is actually in the minds of the women and women who break the ceiling within their minds will also break it in the hierarchical structure at the work spot.

10: I believe already, the power have been shifted to woman and it will not make much time for them to break the ceiling and to become great leaders or top managers. Because woman care for society genuinely with mothers love........
Days to come for the maen army men get leaded by women.....Vandhae Matharam.

11: How many of these women make it to the senior management level or break the glass ceiling?

Don't under estimate any one, human is a human either male or female. Everyone has power to think, some times women are more powerful then men in taking decisions’, why because they don't have to worry the consequences. If she lost some thing in the decision making process looses her job, but at the same time her partner will support her. That was Indian Culture.

In taking the decision process if a male takes same decision and looses his job, that is a painful and he always think why should my wife earn for me? And get stressed-out in taking decisions.

In this process, I hope women will get success most of the times.

If men consider above philosophy and take women’s help/support without hesitating, then no-one stops a men’s decisions and he always on top of everything (see the proverb. always a women behind a man), any success stories will comes like that.

Conclusion: I am not a favor of it, but at the same time we need to accept some point of time by seeing our women entrepreneurs in the world famous organizations and their decisions.

12: Muscle power which is gift of nature to man has no meaning in IT or BPO sector. Women folk with a bit of bright head over their shoulders and who care least for social values(I mean ready to accept the status of un-wedded mothers) can easily break the glass. Donot be surprised if they break concrete blocks.

13: Women definitely have made a mark in the society, from the conservative kind they have become more of what they longed for many ages.

I am not sure why people blame the call centre crowd, Does it not exist in other secotrs

14: Hi

I respect the figure showing in survey .. . . .
Womens are alltime with men .. and without man the women are empty .. but job opportunity for specially womens shows that V r going to one step ahead to develop the country like USA and JAPAN .. ..
see . . experiences of unmarried officers of Call Center -in article published clearly says "why women need more sex" in Times Of India portal"), I request all the people of India that they should read it .. .. it says . .. . .. .. .. . . . ..
soon India will also have 40% of unmarried Mothers like USA or if we progress steadily we can also achieve the 70% unmarried Mothers . .. it may be upto 80% .. .
Do we trust on it ..
If yes then..
Did any Indian will want the said siuation in India .. .
nobody will be agree to develop the country on cost of like this .. ..again i m saying if it is right . . ?
i think if it is like this then our answer should be no .. no. .no .. not at all.

-Men can't leave his family and adopt in-law's home, family, their ways and even their family name.
-Men can't manage home , kids and work at same time.
-Men can't put their career on stack to give birth and can't even play a role of mother for child. It's just impossible for men to take care of a child without a women.Women even accept being a unmarried mother but unmarried father just run away from his responsibilities.

25: @Bivash Das, you can blame them... we opened the market, globalization came in... now we cannot put a break to things that will bring in. Why many men want their women to work and get in more money for better lifestyle... yet... want them to take care of household.. You really can't get the best of both worlds... Remember that Japan was once a country with rich culture (seen The Last Samurai?)... but once you open the doors all sorts of winds are gonna rush in - onces with foul smell too

26: gr8...Can Dr Sudha tell us why should u need consideration ...bcoz u r women...u r hypochrites....on one end u say u r equal to men...and in other end u crave for quota.....u accept any one of these...and i admit with Bivash\'s comment....everybody knows how most of call center gals are...u admit it or nt...it does not matter..if u still ve doubt..then marry a BPO girl and u ll know the facts..and as 99% ppl r nt ready to marry BPO girls...so may be u can help them....anyways i dont want to comment on this....i have only one point....wht special previligies u need being a woman...and if u cry tht u r equal to men....then dont crave for sympathy.....

28:Whether women will break the glass ceiling or become equal to men or not, as per these studies...one thing is definitely sure.. that no woman should marry a MCP like these guyscommenting outrageously on women here... if he understands the study well, this is not a debate on the character of women/BPO women but he only needed the slightest chance to show his own character...
