Who wants to be India's first woman astronaut?

By SiliconIndia,Wednesday, 07 October 2009, 02:59 Hrs
Bangalore: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is offering an opportunity for women to be a part of the first Indian human flight into space, scheduled for 2014. They could be among the first 2-member crew that ISRO sends up into space. The astronauts will cruise for a week in an orbit 400 km above the Earth before splashing down into the Bay of Bengal.
Who wants to be India's first woman astronaut?

But there is a harsh side to such a life-changing opportunity. There will be a long-drawn procedure to pick the best and a rigorous training schedule to help survive gruelling conditions in space. "The process will take more than three years. We will start with about a hundred and bring it down to a few. We will keep it open for women," Dr T.K. Alex, Director of the ISRO Satellite Centre, told Deccan Chronicle.

ISRO has signed a pact with Roskosmos, the Russian federal space agency, for help in selection and training of the crew. The entire process, however, will be conducted at the upcoming Astronaut Training Centre near Bengaluru.

31: Giving money/ food/ shelter to poor to solve problems have never worked. Conducting a space program that employs thousands helps the poor as they provide jobs from the scientists to sweepers. Space programs add value to a nation’s knowledge. Low tech people have always been slaves to high tech societies. Look what happened to Native population of Americas – ended up as slaves to the high tech Spanish. Lazy people in India will remain poor for eternity and will seek gov help all the time and condemn space programs where hard work is required. Don’t beg in the streets and bring shame to India walk to ISRO and ask them for a job.
Most Americans want a manned return to the moon but funding is a problem. Here is where India comes into the picture to provide a cheaper alternative to reach space. Please encourage students especially to see the benefits of space missions to Indian economy (ala outsourcing). The discovery of water on the moon has put us in good light. We need to follow up on CY-2 rover to look for water on the surface. Imagine what an Indian manned moon landing will do to attract space outsourcing contracts. Manned moon landing is the equivalent of PARAM supercomputer to the IT/ BPO industry – it is a technology demonstrator of what we can do – better and cheaper.

32: yes I have full confidence in our scientists remember ISRO already conducted a space recovery capsule experiment succussfully a year or two ago ....
Yes ISRO needs to embark on many more adventours missions this will augur well for India in long term
