London: A footman serving the British royal family 23 years ago - and who had not been lucky in love - got the surprise of his life when he received a Valentine's Day card from Princess Diana.

Addressed "To George" in a pink envelope, the card had a picture of hearts and a teddy bear, under which a printed message read: "Hey Valentine! Not many men will receive a Valentine's card from Princess Diana...", and inside it continued: "...and you're one of them."

The card was sent by the princess in 1989 when she was still married to Prince Charles.

The gesture was to show that while George may have been unlucky in love, the princess still cared about him, the Daily Express reported.

The princess also added in her own hand: "To George, from Diana!"

The surname of the man named George has not been revealed.

The card, which George kept until his death, is now being sold by his family for 8,000 pounds.
