Bangalore: With more than 500 IT companies employing above 55,000 IT professionals, West Bengal is wooing the IT companies for investment and plans to become the next IT hub. It registered a growth of 46 percent in the FY 2006-07 with an export revenue touching 3600 crores. The state has an ambitious plan of contributing 15 percent share of India's total IT/ITeS exports by 2010. Addressing the media at the Bangalore IT Expo, Dr. Debesh Das, Minister-in-Charge, Information technology, Government of West Bengal, said, "The India Design Centre (IDC) which is coming up near Kharagpur, will not only give a boost to the high end semiconductor technology sector but will also provide the entire ecosystem for the VSLI industry in one integrated building." Apart from Kolkata, Kalyani, Durgapur, Siliguri, Kharagpur and Halida have been identified for development of IT hubs in future. The advantages of investment in these places are physical connectivity, land availability and cost, urban and social infrastructure and level of private sector interest. These projects will add another 30 million square feet office space to the existing 22 million currently being developed in Kolkatta on the basis of sanctioned projects. Infosys, Wipro, TCS, HTMT and many others are in talks with the government for investments in new facilities to be brought up in these areas. "Recording the increase in investments and growth of IT infrastructure, West Bengal will be offering 200,000 jobs in the IT sector by 2010," said Das.
