Watch out, half your colleagues are 'spying' on you

Bangalore: Your secrets in the workplace may not always be a secret, as a study conducted among Indian workers reveals. The study commissioned by Yasni people search was conducted among 974 Indian workers, revealing that 42 percent admit 'spying' on their colleagues.

The study revealed that the workers searched online for their colleagues' and managers' social networking pages, blogs they have commented on and forums they are members of, in the hope of finding some hidden personal secrets. The study suggests that this may ultimately lead to better relationships within the workplace.

"Over 40 percent of employees have the advantage of knowing what their manager likes to do in their spare time and what better way to impress your boss than to show an interest in their favorite hobby?," says Andy Barr, Chief Communications Officer of Yasni.

Recently, a survey revealed that more than one-third of IT professionals abuse administrative passwords to access confidential data such as colleagues' salary details or board-meeting proceedings.

Data security company Cyber-Ark surveyed more than 400 senior IT professionals in the U.S. and Britain, and found that 35 percent admitted to snooping, while 74 percent said they could access information that was not relevant to their role. In a similar survey last year, 33 percent of IT professionals admitted to snooping, which shows that the trend is increasing and it is time to watch out.

3: How confidential is then the highly confidential red tape files, military records, and other key bodies if spying is so common in corporates. Hacking is a spygame and a rapidly advancing nation such as China too is facing the problem of net hackers, password stealing and felony. This is much worse than terrorism. Lets not forget he who cheats on others get dumped

7: Spying is prevalent in all organisations even if only 2 people work. In India it is called chamchas who rule the roost to please their bosses by giving them information about what other employees talks & thinks about the bosses & what work they do.

15: Survey should be conducted for how many Girls are spying on Guys etc ...

16:Hay Guys.. I was just kidding. Actually the survey is quite useful. It is one of the tactics to know your Boss or colleague a bit more personally so that it will be easy to work with. That is why in Job interviews they ask "Tell me something about yourself which is not the resume." If you want to understand a person as a whole spying is fine as per me. You are just trying to “understand” the other person as a whole apart from just "I am software Engg from such and such company with some years of experience." In Long run it the relation how you keep with your Boss or fellow employee matters.

32: Most of the people will have the habit of knowing the secrets of others. In my company a person has got such a strong network, that he will come to know everything even what is happening in board meeting. Chaywala, house keeping walla, drivers, security guards etc etc etc ..... every body will inform that guy, the secrets. It is too worst.

35: the only thing Indian colleague know is to cut the competition as they already know there are better Indians available every Indian employee. i have also faced the same when my colleague has gossiped against me to my boss, while they do the same mistake. all I can say is guys grow up we have left school long time back. I rather pity those colleagues of mine than get angry on them. i wish we had better psychological counselling in India for those metally retarded people.....

36: True words debashish, but in corporate world, favouritism join hands with partiality which plays a main role in selecting a person for next level of promotion. I believe in confidence & visibility, doing right things at right time, and never fear to do criticism, at right time..
The major problem is in India, most of the sub-ordinates, don't directly approach to supervisors / their managers to discuss with them. Their fear is the best devil which kills their confidence.
