NEW DELHI: WNS Group, a leading provider of business process outsourcing (BPO) services, has emerged as the number one player in the booming back-office services industry in 2003-04, said a study Tuesday. WNS' ranking is based on revenues for financial year 2003-04 reported in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) in the US, said the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom), the IT industry umbrella group. Nasscom Tuesday released the top 15 rankings of call centres and BPO companies for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2004. WNS, which provides back-office services to its overseas clients through offshore delivery centres in Mumbai, Pune and Nashik, was ranked second in the previous year's survey of top 15 BPO companies in India. A former wholly-owned subsidiary of British Airways, WNS is now owned by leading global private equity investor Warburg Pincus, British Airways, and the management of the company. The company provides industry specific back-office administration services for the airline, travel and transportation, insurance and telecom sectors. Wipro Spectramind, a BPO arm of India's marquee software maker Wipro, and Daksh followed WNS at the second and third positions respectively. Wipro Spectramind had figured on top of the pack in the previous year's survey. While New Delhi-based Exl Services slipped from the previous year's fourth rank to ninth position in the top 15 BPO companies list in 2003-04, Convergys India Service moved up from the last survey's sixth to fourth rank. Other companies featured in the list are HCL Technologies BPO Services, Zenta Technologies, ICICI OneSource, Mphasis BPO Services, Tracmail Group, GTL Ltd., vCustomer, Hinduja TMT Ltd., 24x7 Customer, and Sutherland Technologies. The IT Enabled Services (ITES)-BPO segment accounts for 29 percent of the total software and service exports from India and witnessed a growth of 46 percent to reach $3.6 billion in 2003-04. "The Nasscom rankings have emerged as an industry benchmark, which is used by analysts and customers globally," said Kiran Karnik, president of Nasscom. In the last financial year, Indian ITES-BPO companies were the largest recruiters in the technology sector, adding about 70,000 jobs. This sector is estimated to register a growth of about 40 percent in fiscal year 2004-05 to reach revenues of $5.1 billion. According to the lobby group, the ITES-BPO sector continues to gain a foothold, with more than 80 percent of the Fortune 500 companies evaluating off-shoring most of the non-strategic processes now. There are more than 425 ITES-BPO companies in India.
