London: Vodafone has announced the release of its most affordable ultra low cost handsets to date, intended to give millions of people in emerging markets the opportunity to share in the benefits of mobile technology for the first time. The Vodafone 150 will retail unsubsidized at below $15 and the Vodafone 250 will retail unsubsidized at below $20, depending on the local market. Nokia has been planning to launch a $10 phone for a long time but the product has still not seen the light of the day.

Launching in the first instance in India and six markets in Africa - The Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Mozambique, Qatar, South Africa and Tanzania - it is in emerging markets such as these that the potential of the mobile phone as a powerful social enabler is most apparent. For example, more than 11 million registered customers across Vodafone's footprint now rely on their mobile phones for money transfers and bill payments. Vodafone is enfranchising its customers both by extending the countries offering such services and by rolling out more devices which give access to them.
To maximize the availability of the handsets across countries with sizeable and isolated rural populations, the launches will be supported by an extensive logistics infrastructure, reaching deep rural segments where mobile penetration typically remains low. In India, it is expected that device availability will reach 60 percent of the population.
Patrick Chomet, Vodafone's Group Director of Terminals, said, "The cost of mobile handsets can be one of the most significant barriers for people in accessing and benefiting from the growing number of socially valuable mobile services. The lives of people who use these phones - the Vodafone 150 and Vodafone 250 - will be changed and improved as they become part of the mobile society. I am proud of the work we have done and will continue to do in this critical area of customer empowerment."
The Vodafone 150 and Vodafone 250 both offer excellent voice and SMS services, as well as support for mobile payment services. The two devices share most specification features, the main differences between them being that the Vodafone 250's screen is both color and slightly larger, and it has an FM radio.
By focusing on a custom-built feature set and packaging design - without any compromise to user experience, quality or safety - and by successfully leveraging vendor and partner relationships along the supply chain, Vodafone and handset manufacturer TCL have been able to significantly reduce the usual manufacturing costs and, therefore, the retail price.

2: Yes. Another involuntary action of Global
Warming. Good irony, where Nokia committed to
plant a tree sapling for every handset
dropped. on the other side this guy started
production with this variant the could bring
the disaster.

4: I didnt understand the logic behing the Brand
Manager of this phone in not selecting a name
for different markets based on their
currency.
Please change the model name something like Vodafone 600, Vodafone 900. This looks more handy

8: You guys are talking about Dollars, not
Rupees.
Any mobile phone for under Rs. 10/- or Rs. 15/- must be the newsmaker.
And someone bought a phone for 5 Pounds.
When will you guys come down to India and talk about Rupees.
I recently purchased a Nokia color phone with camera, infrared, bluetooth for just Rs. 300/- and this is the news.

20: Its not about the phone cost- dont be naive
to believe that. Its all about capturing
share and the service. Cost of the phone is
more than $15 but they will gain significant
share and margins with continued use.

24: The question is that these days every day
there is some up-gradation in technology
resulting in people reselling their cellphone
!
Now days you get a second hand cellphone for 300-500 bucks (feature: colour screen, nice audio quality, infrared, bluetooth etc etc )
Though the features for us sounds obsolete yet for people who cant afford its comparitively new then why the hell would any one purchase these $10-$20 cellphone which dont even have infrared, bluetooth facility . they just provide the basic features of sms and calling and bill payements with the help of vodafone live or sms !
last month my servant got a coloured cellphone for Rs. 400 it had color screen, bluetooth, memory card and it even looked better then the snap of vodafone cellphones in this article !
Trust me these days everyone has a cellphone even the person who cant afford a cycle !

25: Well said this is another environmental
disaster.
we must bring in something pluggable/upgradable feature than saying new models.(installable features)
First of all india, if they can enable soft phone for all office for those have computer enabled and add more computer instead of landline, especially for office,we would really save a lot for a country like india, As the government can cut lot communication charges (using intranet VOIP epbx)and not more cheating /holding of office files (process wise) and if that can happen we would first government to have open source egovernance and especially all folks in this forum would prefer."i hope so"
