Via to launch Rs 30,000 Notebook computers in India

NEW DELHI: Breaking the price barriers for offering high-end computing at low prices, chip set manufacturer Via Technologies will launch a sub-Rs 30,000 Notebook computer in India in March. "Via's Notebook specialist partner ACi (Asia) will assemble this Notebook computer in Bangalore based VXL Instruments which is also a partner of Via," Via Technologies Inc country manager Ravi Pradhan said. "We will launch the multi media Notebook at a cost of Rs 29,999 in the second week of March and our partner ACi (Asia) Ltd will launch it in India," he said. "The Notebook would be one of ACi's Ethos entry-level family. The Aci Ethos V with a 128 MB RAM which can be upgraded to 512 MB, hard disk drive of 20 GB (upgradable to 60 GB) and with a CPU of one Ghz Via Antaur which could be scaled up to 1.4 Ghz," Pradhan said. It comes with a Linux operating system but could be scalable to Microsoft Windows operating systems Open Office as similar to MS Office. The company would target education and corporate segments with the offering besides SOHO segment. ACi was the first company to launch sub-Rs 50,000 P4 Notebooks to the education sector over 10 months ago. The Notebooks would initially be launched in Delhi and Mumbai.
