Varsity libraries in India for automation, knowledge management

New Delhi: CALIBER-2007, a conference to focus attention on knowledge management and issues relevant to higher education and academic libraries, is being held at Panjab University Feb 8-10. CALIBER stands for Convention on Automation of Libraries in Education and Research Institutions. It is being organised by the INFLIBNET Center (University Grants Commission, Ahmedabad) in collaboration with the university. Organizers said that one decade into its expansion, the World-Wide Web is reaching ever-broader circles of society, transforming how people learn about our rapidly changing world. Knowledge Management is being seen as the methodology for systematically gathering, organizing and disseminating knowledge. It consists of processes and tools to effectively capture and share knowledge as well as use the knowledge of individuals within an organization. Organizers point out that many argue that knowledge has become the main competitive tool for many businesses. The Panjab University's Central Library is one of the largest libraries in the Indian subcontinent. Its five-storey building is centrally air-conditioned and has spacious reading halls and compact stack areas. Its collection totals nearly 600,000 volumes - rare and latest - and 600 current periodicals with their issues going as far back as the nineteenth century. This university's library has been recognized as one of the six national centers for data-information-distribution in the University Grant Commission's INFLIBNET program. An Inter-University Center of University Grants Commission, the INFLIBNET aims to modernize libraries, act as an info center for the transfer and access of information, support scholarships and learning and academic pursuits through a national network of libraries in around 264 universities, colleges and R&D institutions across India.
