PHNOM PENH: Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Tuesday inaugurated a textile exhibition here, showcasing the common silk-weaving traditions of South and Southeast Asia. Cambodian Queen Norodom Monineath Sihanouk was among the first visitors to the exhibition and was received warmly by the prime minister before they went round seeing the exhibits. The event has been organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to coincide with the first summit between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Tuesday. It will become a permanent feature when a textile museum and service center is set up at an archaeological park in Angkor Wat shortly, Indian officials said. They noted that silk weaving is a part of society across the region, though each country has its own distinctive style. The exhibition is aimed at highlighting this common tradition, they added.
