Bangalore: Scouting the bookshops for syllabus will soon end for the students of the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). The university has tied up with Nokia and a 3D animation firm in Bangalore to provide access to textbooks on mobiles. In the initial stage students of five engineering courses will have access to the service, whereby the content will be provided in capsules of 45 minutes duration each to registered mobile users. Students will be able to download the syllabus using a broadband connection and go through it at their leisure. Finally, in due course of time the university plans to convert the syllabuses of all engineering and management courses into animated form. "They will be able to access their syllabus throughout the day once we are able to provide content directly on their mobile phones. They will be able to read it in even on their buses every day," VTU Vice Chancellor Prof. H.P. Khincha told Deccan Chronicle. However, there are speculations arising on the misuse of the facility by students, as it might lead to students being more glued to their mobiles or even resort to unfair means during examinations. But students try to assert the importance of it. "The university can ensure that it is not misused especially during examinations. Mobiles are mostly misused by teenagers. But this new initiative will certainly change things," said Rahul J. Rao, a fourth semester engineering student.
