BANGALORE: Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) established a network of satellite-based distance education across its 121 engineering colleges with the help of ISRO’s EDUSAT (educational satellite). This enabled one subject expert to teach hundreds of students spread across locations and vast geographical area, virtually. This program buoyed to success and now, VTU and the Department of Information and Biotechnology are proposing the introduction of EDUSAT-based distance education to schools as well. VTU, that crossed the 1000th EDUSAT session in March this year, took an active role in spreading EDUSAT to the school level on September 6th 2006. School principals and academicians assembled at 13 engineering colleges across the state of Karnataka for an interactive demonstration by VTU officials about how the live and recorded lectures could be transmitted directly to classrooms. The students in turn can interact with the subject-matter experts at the VTU studio either through a voice link via the satellite or through a phone-in-console. Anup K. Pujari, IT and BT Secretary, interacted live with the academicians and explained that such concepts of transmitting pre-recorded material, virtual classrooms and resources sharing could help address the problem of shortage of teachers.
