VSNL sets up global offices

MUMBAI: Under its plans to expand global operations, internet gateway and services major Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) has opened offices in US, UK and Hong Kong, and set up a new division - International Business Group - to handle the operations.
The company has also roped in Asia Netcom senior vice- president Vinod Kumar as head of International Business Group, which would be headquartered out of Singapore, VSNL officials told PTI in Mumbai on Sunday.
Prior to Asia Netcom, Kumar was Chief Executive Officer of Worldcom, Japan, they added.
"The objective of the group is to expand the company's service capability and customer facing activity in several strategic markets outside India," they said.
International Business Group would leverage on VSNL's domestic network, international cable assets and Multi Protocol Label Switching- (MPLS) based Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP-VPN) systems, they said.
The group would use Singapore as its operational hub and would address major markets through offices in US, UK and Hong Kong, they said.
VSNL had earlier incorporated wholly-owned subsidiaries in major markets and is present in US through VSNL America Inc, UK through VSNL UK Plc and in Singapore through VSNL Singapore Pte.
The company's external Gateway Operations looks after VSNL's operations in Sri Lanka, VSNL Lanka Ltd.
