U.S. won't succeed if India has more scientists

Bangalore: President Barack Obama has said that the U.S. is facing stiff competition from India and cannot succeed if the country continues to produce more scientists and engineers than America, reports Business Ghana.

"I said this during the State of the Union (address), I repeated it today in Henderson in my town hall: Other countries are not playing for second. They're playing for first," he told the Las Vegas-Area Chambers of Commerce and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority on Friday. "That's just one example of the competition that we're facing on everything. If India or South Korea are producing more scientists and engineers than we are, we will not succeed."
U.S. won't succeed if India has more scientists

This is the second time in two days that Obama has told people to gear up as countries like India, China and Germany are marching ahead in various fields, including clean energy technologies.

On Thursday, the President had said that the U.S., being the world leader, cannot afford to lag behind in clean energy technologies amid the fast growth of India, China and Germany in the field, and sought efforts to prevent any country from "out-competing" America in future.

"We know that whoever leads the clean energy revolution is going to lead the 21st century economy. And we can't wait. Because China is not waiting. India is not waiting. Germany is not waiting. We can't afford to wait," he said at a grassroots fundraiser for Senator Michael Bennet in Denver, Colorado.

1: Poor Obama, He does't know the foolish mentality of Indians.
So far, every one en-cashing the weakness of Indians for the progress of their own country. This is open that 90% of Indians are selfish and will work only for themselves and their poisoning Politicians. The WISDOM of Indians can be utilized only in out of India. There is no team spirit in Indians. They are smart in dividing the country into maximum pieces to rule. If at all Indians open their eyes start following the discipline in the way US following, what not possible for Indians?

2: Obama is being extremely foolish. Engineering and other studies do not really make a nation great. Greatness comes from something else. Some nuts in the US policy wing is taking him on a wild goose chase.

3: Let there be a fair competition among all. At one time India was focussed on controlling its population growth only. Now it needs to focus on education. History shows that as education increases, the population growth slows down. It is like two birds being killed with one stone.

7: 2. However, the logic he is stating is not right. Producing MORE engineers cannot make a country better. We do have more engineers but most of them cannot work on anything. They are just engineers by degree. We do not have many products to be proud of.

8:the 1st step 2 be made is to regognise the innovations and inventions of the indian people . If an an american firm can encourage the inventiona and inovations of an indian , then why cant the indian government do it ? the bangalore patence approval office still have hundred's of posts to be filled and lakhs of applications to be approved for patients .

9:i agree with ur point kaushik, but i want to tell you that if the no.of engineers and no. of managers will be increased then definitely they will add value to the country,if 40%of them are just getting the degree but remaining 60% great engineers and great managers can really help the country growing.
i think ,in a country the ministers and pm should always support and boost up the people but really the people can be innovative rather than pms themselves.actual thing is the country should develop a good place for these people to work and give new ideas to our own nation. govt should try to limit brain drain kind of things.

We need to find out one thing, what he said true means, why indian student not yet get jobs. why he saying like that means, he has encouraging USA people compare to india and china and Germany.

14: I dont think India is in competition with U.S. , we are still way behind those U.S. guys, No matter how many engineers and doctors we produce more scientists in India, The engineers and scientists go to US for a job. What is the use of having more brilliant minds in India. U.S. gives them more money so they go to US. And also about the political condition of the two countries are very different, here in India the ruling party and oppostion fight against each other, while in U.S. they work together for the betterment. The time has come for us to change the society, and work for the betterment of the society, forget the, change ourselves so that we dont fight internally between hindu muslims, upper caste and lower caste. Forget all these shit and make our India a better place to live in. We have the power to beat US, but the problem is that we are very lazy and we dont want to beat them, change urself and in no time we will be ahead of US

We are staying together for centuries, can we not remove their differences, those appeared for the 60 years only. If Hindus and Muslim are together, no terrorist can attack and the parties like Shive Sena and Bajrang can never devide the society. Pleae think on those issues.

17: Hi guys
some of you below wrote too political comments all Obama is saying as a president to be wary and work hard ,as a president of USA it is his responsibility to look after the country that he governs so in that way he has made comments.
Also please note that USA doing well is better for Indian subcontinent and vice versa .every way the flow will be two way.
1.Jack welsh ,Jeffrey R Immeldt ,Tata and Narayana murthy can sit across a table and exchange ideas.

2.Our graduates(iits/others) can pursue higher education at a US university and interact with professors in USA as they do in India ,the level of comfort and acceptance very high.
could we even think of europe(language and other issues)

3.Both are democracies where free ideas, transparency and the aspirations are the same.

4.Americans are very hard working ,straightforward and trustworthy ,this is something we not only cherish and but share with them.

5.When I said Americans can work I meant to say in roles such as Business Development, internship (as a matter of fact Mahendra & Mahendra ,Infosys encourage graduates from Brown ,Stanford, etc to pursue the internship (Mahendra at Mumbai and Mysore for infosys).

6.Bill gates not only readily set up Microsft at Hyderabad but given a lot of money for Aids project in India.
This was something built on the interaction between the staff (from subcontinent) at Micrsoft and himself.
Infact he has given even more significantly for malaraia drug find. What I can say making money is onething but parting it for believing in a cause is different.similaraly Warren Buffet.

7.President Bush even after being out of office still took time to attend a leadership summit at New delhi.likewise Bill Clinton not only gets involved with social projects in india but never misses a chance to attend any indians gathering(Pan IIT).

8.By working together with USA not only it is good for subcontinent but for the world in general.

9.USA is innovation based(education ,R& D) unlike resource rich countries that essentially means we share more things in common with USA than anyother country.

10.A lot of people whom I came know not only live in america
(doctors, engineers,) the experience is very positive and integration very smooth.

Defintely we are friends with USA this is something that was built over a period of time genuinely based on people to people interactions and mutual trust.

yes strategies change as per the geo politics ,everyone will look after them selves(n the whole world) why single out USA .

11.while we have warm relations with UK,Germany,Australia and NewZealand
it is USA that not only recognized our contributions and acknowledged which has helped Indian IT this has then resulted in rest of the world acknowledgeing later.
remember that India was /is portrayed in a different light by media be it europe ,asia pacific .
NASA has allowed numerous engineers from subcontinent to work shine and contribute and it even collabarated with ISRO yes Chandrayan was the vehicle but instruments are from USA too ,yes I see as a collobaration and co-operation between scientists at ISRO and NASA not in any other way.
Yes data might have been analysed first by ISRO but confirmation is from NASA ,I see this as a fine example of international co-operation not in any other way.

12.In the post modern world we share common ideas, ideals, and goals.Being the two world largest economies we defintely need to co-operate and work as a team it is in the best intersts of world.

13.iam sure most Indian Company heads be it Sri Anand Mahindra ,sri Narayana Murty's children ,rahul gandhi ,Chidambaram (defense minister),Amabani's etc are all educated in US universities and so do a lot more.

14.USA has always allowed and accepted be it harekrsihna movement(bhakti vedanta swami prabhu ,Swami Vivekananda ,
dr Apj Abdul kalam to address ,speak and interact with audience very freely .

in this time of critical time we need to support the people of America as they are going through recovery from recession.remeber at difficult times how NRI's mobilized support and funds for India at its difficult times.

So please be supportive of American people and its economy while it recovers

As Citizen of any country they want there people to be in good shape and what the leaders of US are doing right..we shouldnot take it in a wrong way.

It WOuld have been better if you would have made this comment with out Being drunk.(No Personal Offense Here Please)
B'coz the point to be noted is the negative thinking or Mr. Barak Obama. If he would have given a message to his country stating that they should become no 1 in any field.
But he said "we wont succed if india is having more scientists" what does that mean, it means by any means stop indians from generating more scientists.this kind of message gives a undefined meaning to the crowd to take up any means necessary to stop indians which includes violence & explotting the situations like not giving visas to indians & increasing the racisim attacks on indians.
US as a nation is on th top list of GREEN HOUSE GAS EMMISSIONS, THE PER HEAD EMMISSIONS IS MORE COMPARED TO THE PER HEAD EMMISSIONS OF INDIANS.
SO WAKE UP & VISIT INDIA MR RAMA MOHANA RAO & STAY IN YOUR COUNTRY THEN YOU WILL KNOW THE VALUE OF YOUR COUNTRY & ITS PROBLEMS.BEING IN AUSTRALIA YOU WONT KNOW ANYTHING BROTHER.
THIS IS TO MAKE YOU THINK NOT FIGHT OR WIN A ARGUMENT OVER YOU.UNDERSTAND THINK.
US as a nation or any individual might have given lot of money to india in any form but money is nothing & is of no comparsion to the intellectual minds india has given to US or to the rest of the world.
So please stop backing up any nation which speaks against to the integrity of our Nation you being an indian making this kind of comments is not fair.

If we need to go stronger..we need to first solve the problem in our own home. Do you know that indian govt leaders/businessmen who illegally earned money has accounted to the blackmoney which is kept in swiss bank..Does any of the govt in India is daring to bring that out.. nd even thinking to use them for needy people..

So when we dont have thoughts of solving problem at our own home..you/I/Any person shouldn't insult or shown any country down.

We all say that we are true indians..I am proud of being an india..etc..but they are good filmy dialogues..nd no one sticks to it..

31: Obama is creating a tension and insecure feeling among US people. This would have an escalating effect.
This could lead to hatred and racist attacks as it is already happening in Australia. This could also lead to unethical competition practices. Eg: suppress others growth to show once relative growth more (as in Einstein’s theory of relativity).
These statements could also mean that Obama is trying to divert the attention of US people on India rather than the issues already they are facing at home (after 9-11 and the US war). Cheap tactics.
Now after these statements US people would think India, Germany etc as their enemies.
If you observe, USA is country of strategies. It doesn’t have any permanent friends or foes. Only one thing that drives USA and that is its own interest.
Most of the people who drive USA economy are non Americans, most are from Asia.
Obama should stop creating panic among people with his statements.

One thing for sure, Obama is digging to his Presidential end. He is becoming one of US's most under performing Presidents, passing lewd comments about countries, against outsourcing, targeting US's only friend in the world, India.

Guys no need to panic India and USA are best friends in the world.Either way if USA reagains its old poistion back it is defintely going to invite professionals back to its shores and iam sure that includes people from Indian Sub continent as well.
I feel rather than competition i say think of synergies that can be leveraged between the two ,how about india allevaites poverty ,that means more people that can be potential consumers this will mean companies can produce more products for the market,if the products are world class and help people live better why not and yes if USA can do that it is good ,even if India it is good.
So I feel more co-operation and friendship between the world largest democracies.
We have been to usa shores and likewise americans are welcome to come to indian shores to work here if they wish.
so lets be friends and try to be best friends

46:

The apprehension of President Barack Obama about supremacy of USA in the world in the wake of tremendous developments in fields like Science and Technology, Clean Energy Technologies in countries like India, China, Brazil and Russia, is understandable.

While developed European and Asia Pacific economies have received a significant amount of attention, the most popular investment destinations remain the four largest emerging market countries: Brazil, Russia, India, and China, collectively known as the “BRIC” economies. Together, these four countries currently comprise 40% of the world’s population and 15% of GDP, ensuring that they will be a force to be reckoned with on the global stage for years to come. Meanwhile, combined foreign reserves total over $3.1 trillion, potentially allowing these countries to influence world trade and push politics more towards a multipolar world.

However there are many issues to be tackled for further advancement of science and technology in India.

In a thought provoking article, Securing India’s science future (The Hindu, November 12,2009) N. R. Narayana Murthy brought out many interesting points on the growth of Science and Technology in India:
In 2004, while reviewing the science and technology policy of the Government of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said: “In a world where the powers are determined by the share of the world’s knowledge, reflected by patents, papers and so on…it is important for India to put all her acts together to become a continuous innovator and creator of science and technology intensive products.” The importance of scientific and technological advancement in today’s highly globalised environment cannot be overstated.
If we are to go by an observation in a report by India’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that “the health of a nation depends, among other factors, on the health of the state of its science and technology,” we have cause to be concerned about the health of our nation. In an increasingly competitive global economy, knowledge-driven growth powered by innovation is a critical imperative. While India is uniquely positioned to use technology for progress, it has in the recent past lagged behind considerably in the quality and spread of science research. This is a critical lacuna that could well determine the fate not just of our scientific and developmental future but, more importantly, of our progress as a nation.
Status and challenges
A recent study by Thomson Reuters titled Global Research Report: India concluded that, given ideal conditions, India’s research productivity would be on a par with that of most G8 nations within seven to eight years and that it could probably overtake them in 2015-2020. In the last decade, India has seen its annual output of scientific publications grow from roughly 16,500 in 1998 to nearly 30,000 in 2007. Before we pat ourselves on the back, it would be good to consider things in perspective. Although India produces about 400,000 engineering graduates and about 300,000 computer science graduates every year, just about 20,000 master’s degree holders and fewer than 1,000 Ph.Ds in engineering graduate each year.
In 2007-08, India had about 156 researchers per million in the population, compared with 4,700 per million in the United States. In terms of sheer numbers, in 2007 China had 1,423,000 researchers, second internationally to the United States, which had almost 1,571,000. India by comparison had 154,800. India’s spend on R&D in 2007-08 was about US$ 24 billion compared with China’s investment of about US$ 104 billion back in 2006 and the United States’ US$ 368 billion. These comparative allocations, which have not changed much since then, reveal the gross inadequacy in India’s commitment to research, considering our scientists’ potential and our aspirations as a nation.
A survey of 47 universities conducted by the University Grants Commission in 2007-08 revealed vacancy levels as high as 51 per cent. It is evident that the majority of India’s graduating engineers, particularly the cream, are going directly into the job market – affecting the number and quality of those available for research. This trend is partly because of the widespread notion that remuneration in a research career is below par and partly because of the lack of adequate encouragement and direction for young potential researchers.
Not enough Ph.Ds graduate in India — be it in number or excellence — to meet the growing staff requirements of its universities. As a result, even the quality of faculty has shown a declining trend and this is bound to have serious repercussions on the country’s intellectual edge. Add to this the issues of politicisation of the Indian scientific establishment, particularly in according due recognition, the lack of adequate funding and infrastructure, and the disparity in research funds and facilities available to universities. Further, the long-time policy of target-oriented research in selected thrust areas, as against open-ended research, has often come at the cost of the basic sciences. It is common knowledge that research in basic sciences is a critical pre-requisite for the success of applied sciences and the bedrock of all technological advancement.
The need for a strong science eco-system based on a sound research foundation has an integral connect with India’s development as a world power. India needs the best intellect available for government, business, military, or any aspect of society to strive for global excellence. Their accomplishments need to be lauded and brought to the forefront. Globally, there are several prestigious awards that ensure due recognition, visibility, and reward for outstanding achievements in research. There is a need to emulate this in India to encourage higher levels of research work with an impact on India’s development. One such initiative is the Infosys Prize, which has been instituted to honour outstanding researchers who make a difference to India’s scientific future and to motivate youngsters to consider careers in research. Overall, there is a need for many more integrated, multi-pronged, and multi-institutional interventions to encourage greater participation and strengthening of scientific research in India. Our success in ensuring this over the next few years will determine how best we will be able to secure India’s scientific and developmental future.

49:To make this competition effective and focussing to overall developement of the country, our industry&commerce ministry and other supporting department should take necessary initiatives and proper proceedings to make our country no.1.
second thing is the tech.&indus. system designing/redesigning and implementation based on requirements and limitations.
third is the effective &selective participation and co-ordination of the employees in different stages and departments to fulfill respective goals.
afterall the main thing is the passion of everybodies to attain and maintain the goal with hardwork and discipline.

50: I think India is the country which is the birth place of brilliant minds. Although, many of them could not show the world their due to lack of resources or negligence or supervision. Many of indians want to work with US or other countries only because of money and good living conditions. If all facilities are provided here in india to the scientists, then India could soon become number one.

Hope for bright future of INDIA
