US Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill leaves here on a trip to Asia during which he will attend a meeting of the Group of 20 (G-20) finance ministers in India and visit Hyderabad's high-tech zones.

WASHINGTON: Before leaving, O'Neill spoke of his trip to reporters here Friday. O'Neill is scheduled to meet economic officials in India and Pakistan as well as examine reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan as part of his visit. He will attend the G-20 meeting in India on November 22 and 23. In India, the secretary said, he would have a full discussion on the global economic outlook. "I look forward to advancing our efforts to bring greater predictability to emerging markets and to furthering our cooperation in detecting and halting the financing of terrorism." Speaking of tech facilities in Hyderabad, he said: "These success stories show what is possible when citizens are allowed to reach their potential." O'Neill said he planned to tell his G-20 counterparts that the U.S. "is on the road to recovery and that global prosperity requires that all the economies of the world rekindle growth". The G-20 members -- Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Korea, Turkey, Britain, the U.S. and the European Union (E.U.) -- work to find ways to bring greater stability to the international financial system. In Pakistan, O'Neill said, he would convey his appreciation for the efforts of the Pakistani government and people in combating terrorism. The U.S. and Pakistan have a shared interest in fighting terrorism to maintain the freedom of "our peoples to live their chosen lives in peace and build prosperity for themselves and future generations". O'Neill is scheduled to visit a women's sewing cooperative in Pakistan that was started with a small loan from a micro-finance institution.
