Washington: Despite its economic and technological advancement, the U.S lags behind many developed countries when it comes to the high speed Internet. John Irons, Economic Policy Institute's (EPI) research and policy director, says that compared to 29 other developed countries the U.S. ranks squarely in the middle in overall high-speed internet penetration. With its 22 high-speed internet connections per 100 residents, the U.S. trails far behind in a field dominated by Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Korea, Norway, Iceland, Finland, and Sweden (where broadband penetration ranges from 34 to 29 per 100). In the highest of the high-speed technology, the U.S. is also slow off the starting block. The U.S. trails far behind Korea and Japan, which lead the pack in utilization of fiber optic connectivity. The U.S. also lags behind Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and the Slovak Republic in the share of its high-speed connections that utilize this highest-speed technology.
