ISLAMABAD: The U.S. will not prevent Israel from selling the Phalcon airborne early warning system to India despite Pakistan's concerns it would alter the power balance in South Asia. Pakistani Foreign Secretary Riaz H. Khokhar admitted at a press conference in Washington that he had failed to persuade the U.S. to stop Israel from selling the equipment to India, The News reported Wednesday. Khokhar was here to finalise details of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's visit to Washington June 24-26. During his talks with U.S. officials, he said, he told them India's purchase of the Phalcon had caused "concern" in Islamabad, that it would "affect the conventional balance between India and Pakistan, and that it was not a helpful development from our viewpoint. The Americans stated that they had "resisted the move, but they couldn't have done more". He was also told that the issue was "really between Israel and India". At the same time, Khokhar said, the U.S. administration "has certainly taken note of our concerns".
