US may invest in agriculture in Bihar

NEW DELHI: A leading US congressman visiting India Monday said the U.S. was going to invest in the agriculture sector in Bihar to help develop the economically backward state's economy.
Rep. Frank Pallone, a former co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, said he was impressed by his visit to Bihar, even though the state is largely devoid of infrastructure and other support.
"I visited some villages in Bihar and spoke to the farming community. I think there is a lot of scope to invest in agriculture and develop food processing industries in Bihar," Pallone, a strong India supporter, told IANS.
"They are trying to do much but certainly need support."
He said the state has a potential for exports and that needs to be strengthened.
"Farmers are growing enough food but do not have market to sell their produce. They sell it only next door that does not fetch them good money," he said.
"I met the chief minister (Rabri Devi) and she told me about some problems like rotting of litchi nuts. I am going to assist them through our university to do some research on it.
"The food processing industry can be developed for exporting locally produced food products."
He also visited Gujarat and was optimistic of investment in different sectors there too.
