U.S. lauds India's cybercrime fight

NEW DELHI:It's time for cross-border co-operation in tackling cyber crimes. U.S. think tanks are happy with the way cyber crime is being dealt with in India, according to IT and BPO industry delegation just back from the U.S. Nasscom and U.S. India Business Council are also exploring how countries can co-operate in dealing with cyber crime. “Majority is satisfied with India's ability to deal with cyber crime. Many were pleasantly surprised to know that a city like Pune has a cyber-crime cell,” says Kiran Karnik, president, Nasscom. A Nasscom delegation is just back after reaching out to key regulators, elected officials in the U.S. Congress and U.S. senate, media, think tanks, leading experts on data security and privacy. The Nasscom delegation discussed the need for cross-border co-operation in tackling cyber crimes and the potential impact of criminals illegally obtaining private consumer information. The current visit focused around reaching out to key regulators, elected officials in the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Senate, media and editorial boards, think tanks, leading experts on data security and privacy and key academics. Nasscom officials conveyed the Indian initiatives on amending the IT Act, training for enforcement authorities and the judiciary, establishment of a self-regulatory organization and certification and training programs. They highlighted the excellent record of India's intelligence and enforcement agencies with regard to cyber crime. Also emphasized was India's strong legal framework and commitment for protection of intellectual property. Since the beginning of '05, there have been a number of high profile incidents in the US wherein criminals have illegally obtained private consumer information. Leading experts from the U.S. briefed the delegation on the potential regulatory impact of these incidents and stressed the need for cross border co-operation in tackling cyber crimes. They also lauded India's efforts in tackling cyber crimes and the role played by the Indian IT and BPO industries in establishing world-class practices to tackle cyber crime.
