U.S. hopes to find more common ground with India

Washington: With national interests converging, the U.S. hopes to find more common ground with India, a growing world power that has a significant role to play on virtually all major challenges of the century, says a senior U.S. official.
"We think that India has a significant role to play on virtually all of the major challenges that we face in this century, from global economic dislocation to energy security, climate change, the spread of weapons of mass destruction, and violent extremism," said Robert O. Blake, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs.

"Given India's history as a leading non-aligned movement nation, we have sometimes been at odds in the United Nations and India has opposed UN involvement on sensitive matters such as Kashmir," he said at the Johns Hopkins University Model UN Conference Friday.
"Nonetheless, with our national interests converging, we hope to find more common ground with India in the coming years."
India like the U.S. understands the importance of the United Nations, Blake said, noting "India is one of several countries seeking a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, underlining the importance it attaches to the United Nations."
"Soon to be the world's most populous country, India already boasts a trillion-dollar-plus economy and is a growing world power," he noted.
Blake recalled that last July, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited India and launched a Strategic Dialogue which called for increased collaboration in nearly every field, from developing renewable energy technology to fighting extremism.
India and three other South Asian nations - Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal - are among six countries that contribute more than 5,000 police and military personnel to UN peacekeeping operations, he said noting, "They have played a critical role in, for example, helping Haiti recover from the earthquake."
In the case of U.S., the UN plays a helpful and necessary role in nearly every aspect of its operations, "particularly as we strive to build a functioning, efficient, and responsive democracy," Blake said.

2: It is a very welcome news for India.
1.sir sri Dr Jagdeesh I agree with you ,on another note I had posted comments.I have fully done my research and can say that US and coalition troops deployment has helped the subcontinent region to be stable.
2.Iam of the opinion a lot of homework needs to be done at home ,which I think is happening as the Central Government has roped in nandan for UIID project ,sam for knowledge commission etc.Sometimes I see a very emotional charged reaction to news in media by some readers .While there is nothing wrong in being emotional ,but sometimes it is a bit overdone at any opinion expressed by someone ,even when the audience is non-indians and issue is external (like President obama's address ).
3.We should also concentrate as Citizens of India how we can reduce population growth ,stop mass migration of rural folks to cities.how to keep our civic sense in top notch so that we can have better roads ,cleaner streets ,everyone can share some ideas on these issues.
4.At times we see regional politics taking focus away from development issues ,how we can put back the focus.
5.Everyone should remember USA has already infrastructure, insititutions in place for it bounce back economically is completely different to indian context.
we are still building infrastructure ,revamping our syllabus at universities ,buiding more practical skills etc.
6.Defintely iam of the opinion that USA and India friendship is not just good for USA and India ,the whole region and the world.
7.When the interaction is built at academic ,business and societal levels and all the elements of transparency ,freedom ,and justice in place our co-operation will only strengthen and our relationship much better.
8.For me idea of co-operation between the two countries the names that spring up are Sunita Lynn Williams,Kalpana Chawla,Guru Raj Deshpande (He helped develop the MIT's Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation),pradeep sindhu(Juniper networks),etc.
9.At times the sections of US congress might be critical of India Just like some MPS in indian parialment vice versa ,but that should not deter us from forging strong relationship on people to people basis .
10.it is a fact that the all USA embassies process more visa in india than any other embassies of other countries,by sharing sensitive information(visa abuse etc) ,knowing each other strong points and working on them and keeping going in this modern period is very important.
11.All IIT ,IISC professors interaction with USA universities faculties is always high and we should keep this going ,just as well the seminars that India hosts should attract more USA based academics to visit and vice versa.
12.Iam also of the opinion and the research that I have done cross cultural marriages between indian origin and Americans when they do happen has resulted in stronger family ties as the sensitivity of west blends with eastern beliefs.
I pray to god that the good name Indians gain stays that way well into the future.

4: There are already strong links between US and
India in many fields. USA is leader in
Renewable Energy research and occupies First
Position in the World in Wind Energy
installations.
Further co-operation in fields like Science and Technology especially, Nano technology, IT, etc., will pave the way for advancements in these fields.
