U.S. cos can't find American engineers, turn to hire Indians

By SiliconIndia,Monday, 06 September 2010, 04:47 Hrs
Mumbai: The dearth of engineers in the U.S. due to which companies have no other choice but to hire foreign skilled workers to meet their requirements in American companies. Cognizant says that it has 57 recruitment staff in the U.S. looking for local engineers but due to unavailability of skilled workers in U.S., the company is forced to import Indians on work visas, reports Joe Leahy from Financial Times.
U.S. cos can't find American engineers, turn to hire Indians

"If you look at the core of what we do, the technology work, the US simply doesn't have the talent base today. Although unemployment in the US today is high, IT unemployment is still very low," said Francisco D'Souza, President and Chief Executive, Cognizant.

The border security law was passed by U.S. last month, that will be partly funded by doubling the cost of visas for IT workers, a move that will mostly affect Indian outsourcing companies.

Indian outsourcing companies support a bulk of their staff in India and keep some of its employees in the U.S., who would work closely with the clients.

"About 70 per cent of US PhD students are foreign born and are often hired in the US, making their way into Silicon Valley or government agencies such as Nasa," said Partha Iyengar, of Gartner, the consultancy. "The bigger challenge for the US is, if they start to lose this talent at the lower end, the innovation engine that has been driving the economy starts to dry up," Iyengar added.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, India's undergraduate university courses produce about 600,000 engineers a year compared with about 84,000 in the U.S. in the academic year of 2007-08.

S.?Gopalakrishnan, Chief Executive of Infosys Technologies, India's second-largest IT company, said the group had 10,000 staff in the U.S. but only 1,600 were nationals or permanent residents. The company wanted to hire 1,000 people a year in the US but faced a scarcity of talent. "It is a struggle," he said.

Um... the innovation engine that was driving the U.S. economy began drying up over a decade ago - the same time that the U.S. was flooded with Indians. Funny, but HAD a booming economy before Indians came to USA. Now the economy is a disaster. Outside of Apple, there has been no innovation in the USA in the same decade that Indians have taken over. Sorry, but this poorly written NASSCOM propaganda doesn't quite fit with the real facts.

7: No matter the no of engineers our country is producing .. but the bottom line is that the basic ethics are taught no whr, neither in schools not in colleges. i think soon we will be having another so called course that aftr a student completes his/her 10 he dosnt need to do 11,12 whr all the basics are made concrete. instead of that he will be doing a 5 year engineering course and will be called another engineer among several thousands unemployed,

Kindly do something about it Mr. Kapil else then the only options left with these unemployed engineers wud be either to join politics and to take all the money that they have wasted on their engineering course.

8: If Mr. Kapil Sibal considers himself a champion of promoting education in India,as i see him posing in media whenever he gets an opportunity, then first bring sanity in private colleges all around India, particularly UP,the most corrupted state of India,Education can not be delegated to people whose sole objective is to make money by bribing people who matters in authority.WHEN THE AUTHORITIES WILL RISE? Just make an honest survey of students of private institutions in NOIDA,who will tell you what is going on in these institutions. For a change, don't act like a politician, but act like a father.

9: Hence proved that they will be paralysed if they continue their protectionist behaviour
Posted by: Sushil - 07 Sep, 2010

10:How did the U.S. create a booming economy long before Indians ever arrived in the USA? Protectionism created 2 deacades of economic growth in the USA - 80s and 90s. A decade of flooding the USA with Indians has produced the biggest recession in 70 years. Paralysed? That's what's happening to the USA right now - with Indians running things. Why are Indians so delusional?

12:United States are always needed technical skilled workers. Actually they are always trying to show strict and toughest country.

We India's already proved that we are the best. But United States don't like Indians, that's reason they are always trying to update his policy against Indians.

I am hoping in some years United States lose his density and power of economy.

I am feeling good, because i know that United States is loosing skilled workers and they want Indians Skilled workers.

13: Why are you so delusional. If you are the best then why has India not created its own commercial operating system? If you are the best, why does every U.S. company you touch go into decline or die. Apple CLOSED its R&D in India in 2006 and it still hires mostly Americans. Apple is BOOMING out of control. You people are pathetic. Not only can't you produce anything, but you're delusional on top of that. Wake up and recognize that you people destroy everything you touch. We're updating our policy against Indians because we DID let you in for over 10 years and all you have produced is the biggest recession in 70 years. Maybe if you had actually delivered on your promise of keeping the US economy going, we wouldn't be trying to get rid of you.

14: USA is turning to protectionism not it is easy but because it is difficult. The US as a nation ahs gone in to some sort of hibernation waiting to explode ... I think in future the country that put man on moon will raie aain they are not like Indians. They have the culture to do it as they did it and continue to do.

It is that they sensed that the population and intelligence in not in their favour the way things move ... so they are drumming it up to revive themselves. We Indians intend to learn from Americans has to accept this and find a way in the new order of world.

Because a minimum of rs.5000/p.m. must be paid ie rs.60,000/p.a.Instead they bribe the external examiner by giving rs.10,000/get the formality of exam in UPTU done

22: It is very comforting reading.
Here in India there is lot of debate going on saying out engineers ( IT ) are not highly employable.
In that context the above article says exactly opposite, though it is in USA.
Obviously what wins the race is best quality for a best ( read as fair ) price, which India is capable of producing.

24: Question is whether cheap labour is the only reason for indian engineers to be hired? Answer is resounding NO. Indian engineers are talented as well.

25: This is serprising, There is no dearth of engineers of all kinds and other professionals, right now most of them working as cashier in store or even clean-up jobs for living, and companies hires cheap labor from foreign. They forget that when it comes to sale their products, they want to sale it to unemployed americans of course.
Posted by: Desi - 06 Sep, 2010

26:That's a good one. What else can these "engineers" do? Professional colleges have mushroomed in India and has become a BIG business. 6 lakh (& increasing by the minute!) engineers per year pass out but how many of them are worth to be a fitter? They are nothing but black mailers or pampered kids of rich parents. I have seen them over the last 25 yrs and am convinced that today they are passing out with just a paper in hand called certificate. Today we have gone down so low on quality that M.Tech. is available on correspondence, who cares about GATE? If the US or any Country can hire these guys it will be good.

27: Impressive! I didn't realise that India produces more undergraduate engineers than the US. I knew India was up there, in the top 5 and certainly top 10. But this is a revelation. So where then is India lacking, in Phd engineers doing research?
Posted by: Varun Shekhar - 06 Sep, 2010

28:Maybe graduating more, but of what quality? Unaccredited IIT? Unable to produce anything? Create messed up projects that Americans have to clean up later. Go ahead and produce 1 billion engineers. If you can't produce even one who can produce a product, then you've got 1 billion engineers too many.

31: It's a total lie, they just wanted to hire from india just because they are cheap and make more profit margins.
Posted by: USACitizen - 06 Sep, 2010

32:Come on man, how come any company (which is there to make profit) would like to go for cheap labor but no quality. Its universal fact that cheap labor from India, YES but at the cost of poor quality, NO WAY.

Lets keep US aside for some time and think globally. Best quality and skills is the only reason that indians are present almost everywhere in world.

Coming back to the point:
Why Pre-Obama administrations ever failed to raise this issue? Can you please provide some light on this. Why only Obama had this magic-dream? Does this mean pre-obama admin's had no talent to bring this matter?

They complain about the quality of their skills level and ability to communicate properly. 600,000 engineers does not mean anything if they are poorly qualified and not ready to contribute.

39:Offcourse India has talent but not all... If you will see quality in education system in india, really pathetic except IIT/NITs/Govt Colleges etc. 800,000 engineers per year, 90% engineers from such colleges where poor infrastructure/labs/faculty etc, just sucking money from engineers. So you cannt compare to US. US hiring Indian due to only low cost(90%). 10% only hiring for skilled/talent pool from India.

In order to do this stop criticising brain drain for a moment and increase funding to existing nits/govt colleges/private colleges.make all private govt aided. The result will be quality in engineering education , improvement in scientific R&D.All Indian engg's will find job in their own country depending on their field of interest and make US go on their own keeping intact all collateral treaties.
