UP to receive 180 Bn World Bank aid

Lucknow: The World Bank has approved 180 billion financial assistance for Uttar Pradesh to develop urban infrastructure and agriculture. The announcement follows Thursday's meeting between World Bank's India Country Director Isabel Guerrero and UP Chief Minister Mayawati here. According to an official press release, the fund would be utilised towards development of urban infrastructure including roads, augmentation of power generation capacity, agriculture, employment generation, health and poverty alleviation. Expressing her satisfaction with the pace of progress shown by the state, Guerrero told Mayawati that the bank had decided to assist the state in its endeavour to combat poverty. "The World Bank would extend a helping hand to UP for upliftment of those living below the poverty line," Guerrero was stated to have said. Earlier, the chief minister apprised Guerrero of the various anti-poverty programmes being undertaken by the government. She also gave an account of the state's plans to improve rural and urban infrastructure. He later held a meeting with a high-level UP delegation headed by cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh.
