Bangalore: The states where e-governance has taken shape will now support the mighty project of Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI). These e-governments have been assigned to be the link between the UIDAI and the local officials who will physically be handling the registrations, reports Karen Leigh of The Mint. For the states where e-governance is still not activated, the work pertaining to UIDAI will be handed over to the information technology departments. R.S. Sharma, Director General, UIDAI, said of the e-governed states, "They will be the departments which hold everything together. It's an idea whose time has come, the idea of (digital) state data centers." The UID will be highly benefitted by the e-governed states, as the data gathered will be highly efficient. All the information of the citizens like biometrics, PAN and personal statistics will be available and can be accessed from any computer. The use of technology in this humongous data collection will only lead to reduced costs and time. This makes the time needed for verification of details also lesser. Karnataka is leading the way in the field of e-governance. In May this year, 25,000 residents in rural areas signed up in the UIDAI.
